Gurren Lagann 8
Current Mood:
Ecstatic

First off - I’m at Fanime Con, and I got a Gurren Lagann DRILL *_* It was at Gainax’s Gurren Lagann panel. <3
But back to the topic at hand: Gurren Lagann episode 8. I find it kind of distressing how many people were shocked by what happened in this episode. o_O; But I’ll talk about it in detail under a jump, for the sake of spoilers.
Okay, so, Kamina died. Why anyone is surprised by it is beyond me o,o Look at Merlin. Look at Obi-Wan. Look at Dumbledore. The mentor of a young protagonist ALWAYS DIES or disappears, people. Because if he doesn’t, then the protagonist never learns how to be strong on his own.
In fact, a week before this episode aired, I had been talking to someone about how Kamina would have to die in the next few episodes for this exact reason. Granted, I’m not sure I expected it in the very next episode, but I knew it was going to happen.
All that said, I’m also surprised by how many people have responded by saying that Gainax has screwed themselves over and they won’t be able to keep the show as cool anymore. Now, people tell me I’m overly optimistic at times, but I still say that people who jump straight on the “OH MY GOD THE SHOW IS GOING TO SUCK NOW” are being a little overly pessimistic, no?
At any rate, I’m going to give them a shot to see what they do with it. I’ll just prepare for the worst and hope for the best, that’s all.
I only learned of Gurren-Lagann two weeks ago, so I’m doing some serious catching up. Thank god the fansubs were easily found.
Of course you’re right that the mentor of a young protagonist has to die at some point - but I truly loved Kamina and the shock of his death was extremely painful.
It was also very painful to watch Simon’s depression and suffering.
But life gos on, we learn and grow, and those who have died inspire us from the grave.
omg I want that drill!!
