Catch-Up: DtB, Gurren Lagann, Love*Com, Etc.
Current Mood:
Ponderous

So on Saturday, while I was still in California, my parents had dinner plans with friends, which left me a blessed evening alone to catch up on all my anime. So I figured now was a good time for a check-in on my favorite series this season. Except at the time, “now” was something like Sunday. Oh well.
Right, then, tally-ho!
Darker Than Black
Needs less goofy episodes and more Hei in that mask of his. Yum. In all seriousness, though, I feel pretty comfortable saying that this is my favorite non-comedy of the season.
Claymore
It’s certainly going its bloody way. The action is impressively done but I’m kind of feeling bored with the current plot. Hopefully Clare will bust out some serious ass-kicking moves that bump her to the top of the rankings.
Romeo x Juliet
Okay, this would be second-favorite for dramas. I’m a Shakespeare fan, though, and I love a good romance. The characters are coming along nicely; as events continue, Juliet grows more mature. I’m still waiting to see Romeo grow some balls, but I’m less concerned that it won’t happen at this point - there definitely seems to be some rebellion brewing there.
On to the somewhat lighter-hearted fare…
Lovely Complex
Have I mentioned I’m a sucker for romance? Especially a relatively realistic romance; the characters jump all over the place with fairly realistic reactions (over-the-top facial expressions aside), and they really don’t shy away with the fact that she’s so much taller than him.
Lucky Star
I, for one, enjoy and am still enjoying this. I didn’t expect it to be Haruhi for better or worse, and I’ve been rewarded with a thoroughly enjoyable series. It’s probably not going to make my all-time top ten (in spite of my Konata layout - what can I say? I identify with the geekette), but still worth the watch as far as I’m concerned. Oh, and I like Kona-chan’s dad so far.
Gurren Lagann
Oof, maybe this isn’t so much “lighter hearted” just now, and it remains to be seen if it’ll hit its stride again. The new character addition is interesting…on the one hand, Gainax created one of the most quintessential moegirls ever: Ayanami Rei. However, their females tend to be of a decidedly less moe style. Yoko herself is practically an anti-moe, or a counter-moe perhaps: buxom, brazen, but flawed. Nia, on the other hand, is sweet, innocent, logical, sheltered…classic moe. I’m interested in seeing if Gainax plays on the contrasts between the two much, though I’d like to see Yoko get back into being a bit more dynamic.
Hayate no Gotoku
Fun, fun, fun. What can I say about this series? It’s not excellent, but it’s solid, funny comedy, especially for anime fans (LOTS of references to other shows. Hell, they even referenced Gurren Lagann already).
Kaze no Stigma
This show is so mediocre, and yet I keep watching it. The characters and plot are both reasonably compelling even though none of them are especially exciting. Even the animation is only so-so. I guess it’s just my dark-haired anti-hero fetish kicking in (*cough cough* that’s all your fault, Lulu).
And that’s it on the anime side, except that I’m catching up on Nodame Cantabile (finally). Oh, and that I ordered a new laptop! I should have it in time for Anime Expo (hopefully). Whee.

Going to cosplay Yoko hmm? I want to see progress pics and the finish product! I shall be checking back here occasionally if I can remember the name of the place this is. Later!
