Code Geass / Card Captor Suzaku

Hokay, folks, I’m all updated on my anime, plus I’ve got some more con talk and some other news, so let’s get crackin’ on this long-delayed post.

Bokurano: Although the news that the Bokurano director hates the original manga, I’m really enjoying where the series is going (GO CHIZU! Except I wish you hadn’t wussed out. Just get ‘em both). I think I’m going to find the manga for reading while on my absurdly long trek to Anime Expo, though, because I would like to be able to recognize the differences. (Also: someone on aO noted that the director is a professional and shouldn’t have to be some airy-fairy bullshitter talking about how awesome the source material is, he should just do his job. IMO, declaring that you hate the source material is NOT a professional thing to do - especially when you also actually tell fans of the original work NOT TO WATCH YOUR SHOW. I’m pretty sure they don’t teach you to DISCOURAGE VIEWERS when you go to anime director school. But maybe that’s just me.)Claymore: Bloody and violent, but I’m curious enough about where the plot’s going. Though that weird sexual lipsticky!Clare in ep12 was just bizarre to me. It felt like it came out of nowhere and was very out of character. If her outer non-caring shell is breaking down, I would have liked it to be a bit more gradual…

Darker than Black: I see a number of people complaining that the full plot has yet to really kick in, and they’re not wrong, but somehow I don’t find myself caring in the least. I think the show has a really strong balance between badass action, plot (although more short-term than long-term), and witty/funny dialogue…excluding ep7.

El Cazador: I just want more of L.A. Creepy stalker dudes FTW! But it looks like things are starting to come to a head; it’ll just be a matter of whether they can bring everything together or not. It’s been a kind of fun journey…though in ep12, Ortega confused the shit out of me. He kept going back and forth between being a wannabe-badass and being about to pee his pants. It was a little off-putting. I wanted the final seen in ep12 to be L.A. killing Ortega for trying to kiss Ellis. (Maybe it’ll open ep13?)

Emma Act Two: Ahh, a Victorian soap opera. I love it. I wish Eleanor was a little less obnoxious though. She practically screams when William tells her he can’t forget about Emma because she thought he loved her? Even though he TOLD her he was in love with someone else earlier? Or am I just missing some? Also, needs maor Hakim. Whatever happened to his own feelings for Emma?

Gurren Lagann: What’s to say? I’m itching for episode 15 (which Yamaga-san tells me will explain WHY humans have been living underground - I think it will be a shit-hitting-fan moment). Simon’s development is moving along nicely, though I’m hoping Yoko will come back to the forefront a bit more. (She did in ep11 but I’m worried that it might be one of those “okay, we did the Yoko ep, now we can pretty much ignore her for a while” things.) I might get to do a feature on TTGL soon too. Yay. ♥

Hayate no Gotoku: The Hayate-less filler episode was a little…bumpy…but I’m curious about what’s going to happen with this childhood friend of Hayate’s. Especially since she’s…a clone of one of Nagi’s classmates O_O; no fooling, what’s up with that? Couldn’t be arsed to design a new character or something, Synergy?

Heroic Age: I have no idea why I’m still watching this. I’m not into sci-fi shows or mech shows really. I’m not even all that interested in the plot (that whole contract nonsense is really confusing). We’ll see if I keep with it, but I’m inclined to do so, oddly.

Kaze no Stigma: Why does everyone– including me –like this show so much? The characters are flat archetypes, the plots are same-ol’-same-ol’, and the animation is mediocre. But I can’t stop watching it. Go fig! I had an argument with some friends recently about whether Kazuma and Ayano were supposed to get together or not. They were like “why would Kazuma get with Ayano when he has all those other babes?” Now, if this was reality, that would make total sense. But this is anime, they’re the leads, and EVERYONE IN THE SHOW IS THROWING THEM TOGETHER (I’m lookin’ at you, Ayano-papa). I want them to get together from a viewer perspective, but from a writer perspective I still want Ayano to start having some positive traits and I still want Kazuma to get knocked down a few pegs.

Lovely Complex: Still cute, but it looks kinda like the main couple could get together within the next few episodes and I just heard that there are going to be new OP/ED themes, implying that this is going to be at least another 26 episodes. WTF? Then again, that Haruka dude has been woooefully underused. Bring on the drama! (Poor Risa needs to have a couple of people who actually like her. Why does everyone like Ootani?)

Lucky*Star: I love Konata’s dad. @_@ And I love this show. It’s not the end-all-be-all that some people seem to think, but it is solidly amusing for me. I might even re-watch it someday (gasp!).

Romeo x Juliet: …MORE KISSING AND/OR KILLING PLEASE. These kids are totally in love and they are SO. DAMN. CHASTE. They’re goddamn teenagers, Gonzo, and I want to see them dealing with some freakin’ hormones already. Failing that, get back to the action. Er, the fighting action, that is.

Sumomomo Momomo: Last episode. Subs, whither, etc. (It’s not the kind of show I can follow very well in raw format, alas…at least dialogue-wise.)

Okay, that’s it for the shows (though I’m also watching D.Gray-Man, sorta, and Nodame Cantabile…just not much to say on either at the moment).

On the con front: I will be attending Anime Expo, Otakon, and San Diego Comic Con this year. I’ll be busy for work, but let me know if you’ll be at any of ‘em so we can hang out or at least say hi.

Also: I am not cosplaying Yoko! Even if my boss WOULD let me, running around in a string bikini is not something I feel up to doing. I like her accessories though, so I’ve put together this little “half-play” ensemble (I’ve got the hair sticks now too) which I’ll hopefully at least get to wear when I’m running around the cons on my own time.

Which I won’t have a ton of. I was looking over the schedule for AX, and WOOSH. ~7 panels Friday, 9 on Saturday, 10 on Sunday, and 2 on Monday. Fortunately there are three of us going for aO so I think we’ll be able to handle it pretty well. I may even have time for some shopping while the dealer room is actually open (Code Geass doujinshi, here I come! I want me some Lulu/Nunally and maybe Lulu/Suzaku. And any bizarre pairings I spot, too.)

Okay, I think that’s about it. And the picture at the top of this post has nothing to do with anything, btw, I just wanted to have a picture in here somewhere. And I ♥ psycho!Euphie.
