Neil Gaiman at Ghibli
So Neil Gaiman, who adapted the script for Mononoke Hime about a million years ago (or, you know, eight), apparently just got around to visiting the Ghibli studio.
The only reason I’m posting about this is because it occurred to me that I’d really like to see a Ghibli-produced anime of Sandman. But I don’t think Miyazaki would go for it. Besides, what would Sandman be without art from about a trillion different people? (Hey, maybe they’d do Neverwhere instead?)
I’m a huge fan of Gaiman’s stuff so the idea of crossing that with Ghibli is interesting…the TV series of Neverwhere was a bit low-budget but if he did a sequel set underneath Tokyo or something that would be pretty cool. Even the sight of two such awesome storytellers in the same room, at the same time, is coolness in itself!
You’ve also reminded me that I really need to start reading Sandman…
I like some of Gaiman’s works better than others (American Gods? Not so into it), but just because there was a BBC drama of Neverwhere (which I agree was low-budget…but hey, it was BBC) doesn’t mean that Ghibli couldn’t also do a movie of it. After all, the Sci-Fi channel did an Earthsea drama in ‘05, before Ghibli put out Gedo Senki in ‘06 :)
Neverwhere the TV series came first I believe, and was written as a book afterwards, it’s showing its age (I only saw it for the first time recently, woah, 90s!). And as for the BBC, they might not have enough budget to go into sci fi properly, but they’re not exactly broke either.
And as for Sandman, do you really think it’s Ghibli material? Sandman’s more for mature audiences, Ghibli’s more for younger ones. I agree than an anime, with Neil Gaiman’s input, would be absolutely awesome though. Anyone got any connections in Japan who wants to put a word in?
Oh, wow– I never kne it was a TV show first! But it seems like most BBC stuff I see like this is low-budget, hence the comment.
Back on Sandman– no, I do think it’s too mature for Ghibli, hence my comment that Miyazaki wouldn’t go for it :)
