Quickie: The Day Halo 3 Owned the Entertainment Industry
Dated: 26 Sep 2007
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: I’m not really a gamer. But this is big news for the entertainment industry as a whole. I mean, the biggest entertainment launch in the history of the United States now belongs to a video game. Halo 3 grossed more than any movie has ever opened to, though I’m not sure if that’s adjusted for inflation or not.
So, is it a sign that movies are failing? That video games are moving up in the world? A bit of both? I really don’t have enough time to speculate now thanks to Japanese class, but it’s something to think about.

*sigh* The only thing that scares me about this is that it will probably fast track a P.O.S. movie based on Halo. I can see it now. Would be something akin to “Doom”. And star The Rock.

It’s certainly a big day, but with a copy of Halo 3 costing anywhere from $60 for the regular edition to $130 for the Legendary Edition versus around $10 for a movie ticket, I think going by straight dollar figures skews things in Halo’s favor quite a bit, at least in terms of how popular movies are versus videogames.
I do, though, like the idea that a videogame release can be just as big of an event as a movie release, and I like some of the recent articles in which journalists seem to be accepting the idea that videogames can be just as much art as a movie, novel, etc.

That’s a very good point @_@ It’ll be interesting to see what kind of numbers they churn out. Around $170 million, even if we pretend that they’re ALL regular edition, the maximum would be about 2,833,333…which is no small feat for a video game.
How it compares to a movie would be tricky, since they tend to calculate the full weekend rather than the opening night, and generally don’t offer number-of-tickets-sold numbers…

I am actually curious as to how many X-B360s have been sold stateside. Because I think that we would be looking at almost everyone that owns and X-B360 buying this game if they are cranking out those kinds of numbers. Also like to see the regular version vs. the special version since the special is twice as much. They will probably release final numbers at the beginning of next week after the initial weekend.
