VIZ Media’s Brave Story Gets a Brave Award
According to Publishers Weekly, the American Library Awards were announced this morning, and VIZ Media won the Mildred L. Batchelder Award for Best Work of Translation for Miyuki Miyabe’s Brave Story– as pointed out in the comments, that’s the translation of the novel, not the manga adaptation (released in English by TOKYOPOP).
That’s it for manga-related stuff in the awards, but on an only tangentially-related note, a top prize– the Randolph Caldecott Medal — went to the illustrated novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. A sign that the market is more ready for the concept of the illustrated novel (or, in Japan, “light novel”)? Perhaps.
Actually, if it’s Viz we are talking about, then it’s the original novel version of Brave Story (a HUGE, hardback volume), as the manga is published by Tokyopop.
