Takatoshi Yamada’s ‘03-06 manga Dr. Koto Shinryojo and the subsequent live-action drama were loosely based on the tale of Dr. Kenjiro Setoue, who runs the Teuchi Clinic on Koshiki Island in Japan. Setoue has, for 30 years, “practically single-handedly protected the lives and health of residents on the island,” thus inspiring the manga.
Setoue was due to retire this March, and even that was with a special two-year extension permitting him to continue working after retirement age. But finding a replacement has apparently been pretty tough, so local residents got the town to give him an additional three-year extension, to be renewed on a yearly basis.
