Forget Iraq’s Poke-Fans…Check Out Chile’s

Sex, drugs, and Pokemon? It’s more likely than you think! Newsweek reports on a group of teens called “Pokemones,” who have drugs and orgies (called “ponceo”) and “[draw] inspiration from Japanese anime culture.”

The crews are bisexual and tricked out with the latest gadgets and goodies, courtesy of Chile’s free market economy. I find it kind of interesting that one person worries that the girls are being taken advantage of by the guys “in a situation where a premium is placed on looking cool.” But clearly no one worries about whether any of the girls are taking advantage of the guys, eh?

The actual relationship of this “movement” to anime is simply that the kids are into the stuff. Kind of an interesting read, though. In fact, I think I’d rather watch an anime about these “pokemon” than the originals.

ahahahaa I’m really amused to see something like this in here.
I’m from chile and here “pokemones” are seen EVERYWHERE!!1
but they way it’s explained in there in some parts is wrong, “pokemones” are the teenagers that love to go to parties and dance “reggeaton” music and the ponceo thing is often seen in parties too, that’s really disgusting.

and it has nothing to do about drugs, I mean, if they are drogadicts it’s not because EVERY pokemon does that, I have meet pokemones and they are not drogadicts o:

many teenagers here in chile, HATE hate, pokemones, they’re a really hated “urban-tribe” in here o:

about drawing in inspiration about anime culture that is totally wrong, being a “pokemon” is got nothing to do about that, they don’t care about anime or the japanese culture.

    oh and please excuse my bad english xD;

@Pia: Not at all, thanks very much for contributing! It’s good to hear from someone who isn’t, y’know, Newsweek. ;)

    STOP STOP STOP STOP!!!!

There’s have to be some kind of misunderstanding, I’m from Chile (not a pokemon) and I have to say “ponceo” had nothing to do with oral sex. What they do in this parties (thursay or fryday, between 4-5PM to 10-11PM, they are all minorage so they cant be out to late at night, alcohol sell is not allowed) is try to kiss in the mouth (not oral sex, that was a particual case, not even pokemoes involved, only 3 highschool students, 14 or 15 years old) as much different people (of the opposite sex) as they can durring the party.

Bisides, pokemones are not gender-blending nor they costume are related to Pokemones (most of them dont even play videogames, pokemon is known here for the tv animated series) they just are wierd looking.

So I hope that make things much clear and erase the vision of “orgies” with menor age student in my Country, Bye!

  6. Daydalaus Says:

Please people, this article it’s overly exagerated. I’m Chilean and the “ponceo” it’s mostly about kissing… (and certanly not about drugs) The article implies it’s an open orgy with public consent, but it is not. The interview isn’t very accurate. Besides the real reason for the pokemon name it’s unknown but they don’y really like the anime, they are into the reggaeton music.

  7. pablo Says:

first, go to some of the parks in the lower class neighborhoods and you will lots of oral sex. and the article doesnt say that their movement is about drugs, it just says they use them, not that they are addicted. also, they do a lot of same-sex actions, that is obviously!!! the most importnant thing says is that everyone is into consumerism, and that is the real thing here!!!!!!!!!!!! the teens take for granted that they were born in a free market society and so they just buy stuff. they are all over the television stations and channels. if you are a chilean, you must be a pelolais.

Let me tell you, I’m chilean leaving in Amsterdam, Holland. I arrived a couple weeks ago in Santiago and run into this new tribes. Pokemones are very cool young people, I would not have expected a develope from a very concervative culture into a liberal, somehow carefree society. I think this kind of movements help sociaties to move foward and to be more accepted from one and another.

The articule in Newsweek talks aboutr drug using, this kids don’t really use drugs. I can tell you that because i am dating this cute gay pokemeon who hates drugs, which is not really my case…

Pokemons don`t have oral sex, neither orgies in public, they do kiss around but lets be honest who has not?!

I am sure is going to be very interesting while i am here to see the develop of this emerging tribes, this diversification creates tolerance and a much more vivid sociaty.

    Thanks

I saw they call em pokemons coz they’re a lot everywhere like the pokemons, nothing to do with anime & japan :P
