Join the Dark Side, Get an Anime Job

A fellow named Kirk Bangstad wrote up this article about how the growing interest in anime and manga has led to a ton of kids joining art schools to learn to draw so that they can make anime and manga.
Frankly, it’s an incredibly poorly-written article full of no new information, but I thought I’d use it as a stepping stone: any of you guys art students? My best friend went to the San Francisco Academy of Art University; her style isn’t very manga-like anymore, but I think it’s still part of where she started drawing. Anyone else inspired into art by manga and anime?

I went to Sheridan College for an art course last year and I applied for the Animation course they have there, I’m just waiting for a response now. I’ve always been good at art so I’ve stayed in art classes all my life, but I think my art skills got me more into anime and manga.

I’m majoring in fine arts, but it was my love of drawing that really lead me down the rabbit hole/money pit that is anime and manga instead of the other way around.

Anime got me interested in art when I was 11 and I’ve been drawing anime-style ever since, and even dreamed of enrolling into an art academy and becoming a manga artist later LOL But I’ve long dropped the futile ambition because I have no talent and I’m now waiting for my university application that has nothing to do with arts to get accepted (hopefully) XD

I’ve been into animation since I was little but it was getting deep into the anime/manga culture, fandom and industry that really drove me to start drawing. I’m currently enrolled in Digital Animation and, though my style may be obviously influenced by anime, I’m not in it with the plan to “make anime”. Getting my hands in some quality 2D animation is my goal.

I almost picked the art student route. Anime got me into it and I actually did quite well in art and music, although anything i tried from scratch without reference sucked (unless i made it digitally for some reason) and that discouraged me a lot.
It’s now just a hobby which I hope to produce some substantial route but I am now on route for Aeronautical Engineering. Got some university offers, I just need to meet the required grades this Autumn.
