Quickie: This is just a reminder!
Those of you who have your own anime blogs, you have until April 22nd to nominate blogs for the Anime Blog Awards. Thanks to those crazy bastards who nominated me, and make sure you don’t forget all the other awesome blogs out there!
After the nominations are done, voting opens up to the world at large. I know some people are already anticipating that the more popular blogs (like the ones I just linked) will take the awards, but y’know what? Being popular doesn’t mean you’re bad (some might argue the opposite), and the people who run those blogs deserve recognition, because they’re freakin’ amazing. Not that I’m saying you shouldn’t root for the underdogs; just don’t write someone off just because they’re not!
…Just some random blather inspired by some of the babble I’ve seen regarding the awards lately. ♥
If there’s one thing the anime/manga fandom inparticular has taught me, it’s that the more popular something is, then clearly the less it deserves it. …Or atleast that seems to be popular consensus.
Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing the final nominations when voting opens. Lots of great nominations, most quite deserving of the spotlight.
I don’t think that the anti-popular mindset is limited to anime and manga, but it’s definitely very prominent in “geek” culture, probably because geek culture is, by definition, non-”mainstream” to some extent.
It’s kind of silly; I think some people miss out on things that they might otherwise really enjoy because they think it’s too popular.
I completely agree with you on the the note of people missing out on some things because they believe it’s too popular.
I also didn’t mean to imply the anti-popular mindset is in anyway limited to anime and manga, to me it can just often seem… loudest?
