A Quick Plea

So, about twelve hours ago a subbed version of Tower of Druaga appeared on the Internets. First off, I want to say: don’t be the kind of douche who downloads something that’s being freely (or nearly-freely) given through other means. Seriously, $0.01 gets you a perfectly acceptable permanent DRM-free copy PLUS iPod and PSP versions.
I was kind of curious as to how many people would download it though, so I kept a watch on the data on some sub sites and now, about 12 hours after it went online, nearly 2500 people have downloaded it. Now, maybe some of them just didn’t get the message that GONZO was offering a legit sub release already (I already ran into one fellow who had no clue), but all of them? I don’t think so.
Of course, by comparison, the 51st episode of Hayate no Gotoku (which went up only 20 minutes before the Druaga ep) has seen about 13,000 downloads between its two versions, and the first ep of Code Geass R2 has been downloaded over 15,000 times in the ~8ish hours subbed versions have been available.
Of course, it’s hard to judge even roughly how many people would have downloaded a Druaga fansub if there was no legit version available, but the evidence certainly suggests that making it available legally, affordably, and conveniently cuts down on the sub-viewing quite a bit. And again, some portion of that 2500 is probably simply unaware that a legal version is out there. Good signs! Though I still say people who download the fansub and intentionally ignore the legal subs are douches.

Maybe it’s the typesetting…? I’ve seen people who prefer, say, Order’s Gurren Lagann (hardsubs) over KAA-Order’s Gurren Lagann (softsubs), just because the first one has animated attack names. There might be people who’d rather have their animu with pretty letters and fancy effects, than having a sub with plain Arial 12-ish lines.
Or maybe they just don’t want or can’t pay for a HQ encode of Druaga.

I don’t have Visa/MasterCard/Pay Pal/etc..
Getting one in order to pay $0.01 isn’t my cup of tea. But I was able to download the original subbed version (LQ) courtesy of the guys who paid and uploaded it to some free site.

Well, I watched the official release and also I’m one of that 2500 persons that downloaded the “pirate” version. I was curious to see what things like:
1) They used the same sub from Gonzo (Yes);
2) Quality (Crap compared with the HD version, but better than youtube.
Honestly, apart of those that just want to checkout, mostly ignore the Gonzo initiative.

@deadguy: Why not just watch one of the streaming versions?

Well, if you are like me you will want to check out a series at the highest resolution possible. I’m just a picky person and I like me some HD.
But just to note though I did actually download the legit version mostly for curiosity.

I donated and downloaded both of the new series from Gonzo via Crunchyroll. The high-res downloadable version’s quality wasn’t as good as I was hoping for, however, I’m still going to continue to support this venture because I really hope that anime distribution continues to move in this direction. Unless we support this movement now, I doubt that any other companies will go out on a limb like Gonzo has.
