NYCC08: Fire Department vs Nerds!
So I’m actually taking a little break from the con between panels (to fix the aforementioned phone problems), but I just got a text from my friend saying that in the panel area– 1E, which includes all the panels, not just manga and stuff –the Fire Department of New York has been pushing people back.
The convention is ridiculously crowded today; dealer room and panels both. I don’t really have con claustrophobia problems but I actually had to ask a friend to back away from me a bit at one point. It’s really, really crowded. I hope that next year they get the entirety of the Javits center– or else they might just have to move. And I don’t know if there ARE any bigger venues than the Javits center in the area…

It was not a fun scene…
I arrived in the thick of it as I was supposed to be covering a panel at 5:00 and couldn’t get to it. No panic or anything, just people standing around and occasionally someone trying to push through and being told not to bother. It all about this Robot Chicken thing, which isn’t even a comic. Bleh.
@Brigid: Robot Chicken is huge though, and they do make a lot of references to geek culture in their show. In fact, it was just announced that they’ll be at Anime Expo this year.

I think it was a combination of Robot Chicken and the Venture Bros.
I also got stuck in at the front of that line and missed my 5PM panel… oh well… but I did watch as Seth Green (who is a rather small guy) argue with an imposing security guard that he had to get to his Robot Chicken panel. It took a few minutes but they finally let him through. Pretty funny, though by the time they started letting us through, the Robot Chicken and Quick Stop Entertainment (a preview of Kevin Smith’s new movie) panels were already full. It looked like a few of the earlier panels let out late too, which didn’t help the bottleneck.
