Gossip of the Yaoi Kind: Libre Seeking New Pub for CPM Title?

So! The last we heard of Central Park Media was that they were considering suing Japanese BL publisher Libre. See, way back when, CPM licensed a whole bunch of popular yaoi titles from Biblos for their Be Beautiful line. Biblos later went bankrupt and was replaced by Libre, who now says that CPM’s licenses are invalid because they weren’t renegotiated, as all the other BL publishers did. CPM says they paid up-front for the licenses and that they’re still valid. Libre posted an announcement on their website denouncing CPM’s releases as being illegal, and some fans and retailers started boycotting CPM’s books (or at least the ones in question).

One of these licenses is the popular Finders series by Ayano Amane. According to the editor blog and comments from a Libre editor, who says in comment #481 that a plan to release the Finder series in English– even though CPM has released it in English, but it is (for the moment) out of print and very, very hard to find –is in the works. In #484, the editor says that a specific plan is in progress but that the details haven’t been finalized.

It’s not surprising to me that it took them this long to find a publisher willing to take on the Viewfinder manga. It seems to me that the manga companies generally aren’t especially hostile to each other, and whoever takes it on could wind up a target of a lawsuit from CPM– if CPM ever even gets around to suing Libre. And yes, it’s a VERY different situation from when, say, Bandai Entertainment snagged the Gurren Lagann rights or even manga license rescues from ADV; in those cases we can assume that the original contracts were voided, whereas in this case the validity of the contract is in question.

We’re already speculating on what publisher it could be; 801 Media (with their recent hints at a major license that could get them in trouble) seems the most obvious choice.

Interesting indeed. I have trouble imagining any BL publisher willing to take up that title but it’s definately plausible for such a popular series. 801Media is the first that comes to mind, having recently released both a Ayane Yamano title and a Youka Nitta title. In my opinion they’re also one of the most fan-following and active BL publishers of the several we have putting out books in English. Far stretch but their recent dropped hints come to mind and us forum-goers over at 801Media have talked about wanting Viewfinder constantly.

@Kuri: 801 is the first one that came to my mind, too. I also think that as a smaller company on the whole (compared to, say, Blu/TOKYOPOP), they might be less susceptible to industry politics. The same could be said of Drama Queen, but…let’s wait until they finish up with their backlog, first! :)

This information is posted at the Libre Editor’s public message board. I’d prefer that you use them for a source. I’m the one who posted the message the Yamane community, the contents of which were intended only for the community. There’s a reason our posts are locked, and part is to protect Yamane-sensei’s privacy. I am a moderator of the group.

  4. gia Says:

@sunflower: I’d be happy to alter the post if you could provide me a link to that message board. :)

That said, I apologize– I’d assumed that, like many yaoi communities, it was locked for the purposes of preventing minors from accessing explicit materials.

  5. sunflower Says:

No problem. :) The board is here:

(I have no idea how to create a link here, sorry.) The posts are 481 and 484.

    Thank you. :)

Good guess, I think. DMP is big enough to handle CPM, and 801 has a Yamane title under its belt. It’d be a shame idf it’s indeed the VT series.

I’m among a few who consider the VF series overrated and rather shallow. It’s pretty much a soap opera with a lot of eye candy. Then again, that’s what makes many manga popular, I suppose! :)

  7. 801-chan (^ ^) Says:

Ooooooh, that would be nice. >__< Mainly, I will get in trouble if we publish it and you all don’t buy it cuz I promised the big boss that you all really, really, really, really wanted it despite the fact that Kampai doesn’t want to work on it!

    801-chan (^ ^) *teehee*

  8. 801-chan (^ ^) Says:

Oh, so the answer to the guessing game isn’t Viewfinder if I forgot to mention that before. Keep guessing!

  9. sunflower Says:

@Cat, Viewfinder is as deep as you read it. But then, I’m biased. ;)

  10. Dawn Says:

I’d actually guess a company outside of the ‘loop’ of most American yaoi companies. Maybe a Japanese publisher publishing over here like Deux?

Or Yen Press with their ‘we will publish anything that sells’ philosphy?

Though, I can image VF with a typical Deux shojo-tastic cover or Yen going that hardcore.

Ayano Yamane does seem to have a good relationship with Kitty Media, even letting her pick then change the romanization of a character name. KM did a good job on Crimson Spell, not their usual hack job.

But, if forced to place my bet on a single company … uhh… Kitty.

  13. Simon Jones Says:

CPM’s original contracts, even if their position is correct, may very well be nearing their renewal date right about now (I can’t imagine any manga license that isn’t limited to a few years.) That CPM didn’t capitalise on those properties in this period (thereby blocking the artist’s potential royalties while the genre is still hot) isn’t really Libre’s problem.

Chilly, uncomfortable moments at conventions may be the worst the new licensee has to deal with.

  14. gia Says:

@Simon: Very good point…though until the Libre announcement, CPM was making moves towards getting back on track to releasing all of their titles, including a couple that were released in the month or two following the announcement. So, if what O’Donnell thinks is true, Libre intentionally sabotaged the capitalisation of those properties.

…Note that this isn’t my opinion, but I thought CPM’s viewpoint should be thrown out there.

  15. Cat Says:

[...] Yes, yes, roundup-tastic– I’m back working on more database stuff for the new site, so a bit less time for the lengthy posts (though there’s always time for more CPM/Libre speculation!). [...]

  17. Simon Jones Says:

I don’t think CPM’s position is invalid either (their situation can be visually described by scenes from those very books), I just think it’s very difficult for them to make a case now after such a long time has passed with those books left OOP.

That said, is there absolute certainty that Finder is being handed to a different publisher, rather than a new deal being reached with CPM?

  18. gia Says:

@Simon: The actual words of the editor (translated by me– and I’m not fluent, just a 3rd year, so take it with a grain of salt):

#481: “The truth is, almost all of Libre Shuppan’s comics are coming out in overseas editions. They’ve been translated into English, Korean, Chinese, Spanish, Italian, and French. To buy these versions, you’ll have to get in touch with their respective publishers, not us. As for the English Finders series, however, we have a plan currently underway. For now, please wait.”

#484: “Thanks for the request. As for overseas editions, because an exact release date is difficult to have, our company doesn’t make announcements [implication being "until they have the date," I think]. Still, the Finders series’ English edition’s planning’s details are currently pending, but the release will likely be far in the future I think.”

So, no, it doesn’t say a different publisher, so it could be arranging a deal with CPM. Though given O’Donnell’s attitude when I last talked with him it didn’t seem like he’d be interested– but maybe things have simmered down a bit.
