Anime Blog Award Winners Announced

The “people’s choice” award winners of the first-ever Anime Blog Awards are out, and while there aren’t any surprises among the winners (except, at second glance, the lack of a “best manga blog” win for MangaBlog– hello?), everyone who won absolutely deserved to. Congratulations to all of the winners!

Now the trick for next year is that a lot of these people are just as likely to win next year. I think the ABA should consider a few other categories: best industry blog, for example, now that a lot of companies are offering their own blogs. Sure, you’ve got some that are just fluff (like VIZ’s), but Bandai Entertainment looks to be using it as an actual communication tool with fans, and of course Simon Jones writes a phenomenal blog (sometimes with porn!), while Shizuki (now joined by Yukiko) keep a constant log of Broccoli’s production processes going.

…I guess I just feel that companies who are active in the community deserve a bit of a shout-out. So here’s one, even if the ABAs don’t end up acknowledging it.

I also wonder if people like me, who are paid to do this, should be excluded from eligibility. Or if there should be some kind of separate category for us. Or maybe I’d just fit into “industry” blogs, if such a category existed? “Industry/Professional Blogs,” perhaps? I guess I just feel guilty for having such an awesome job, but I also think that people who are paid to do this often get resources and access from some of the companies that others don’t.

Anyway, just some random thoughts. Anyone else have feedback?

Edit: For those who didn’t know– yes, I am paid to do this. What’s actually happening is this: I work for a company that is developing a new anime site. That site is currently planned to have a “pre-launch,” where I’ll basically just move my news reporting to the new site (though this blog will continue to exist, it will mostly be for more editorial/speculation/commentary). Later on the new site will have a full launch, and I can’t give you details but it is going to be badass. I promise. :)

Wait, you get paid to do this?! Good for you! This is a good trend, and one that i hope continues =D. I also like your suggestion about industry blogs, although I am not familiar with that many (yet).

I didn’t know you got paid for blogging. o.o

And I think the ABA will have a rule where you can’t win the same category twice in a row. So that should help diversify the winners each year.

    Haha, yes, I do get paid, oddly enough! Perhaps I should clarify all that in the post. ^_^;

  4. lelangir Says:

they should do it on article submission alone instead of pre-established blog reputation

I do think that paid anime bloggers deserve notice for what you (had to stop myself from saying “we” since I don’t get paid… yet) do. You work just as hard as anyone else in the industry (travel alone makes you even I think)

  6. Caitlin Says:

I see what you’re saying. I really like your blog (and voted for you) but at the same time, I think people who blog for a living should be excluded. You cited more resources and info but there’s also just more time.

  7. gia Says:

@Caitlin: Thanks for the vote, but I’m with you. Yeah, I do work hard, but unlike the other people who work hard, I get compensated @_@

On the other hand, I think Danny Choo makes significant money off of his blog– but then again, it’s also not his full-time job.

Paid!? For Blogging!? That’s not supposed to work… =S

But meh I like your blog, and like the update on the english side of my hobby, which I never could be bothered to keep up with myself. When this new site goes up, I’ll be sure to check it out XD

  9. usagijen Says:

to get paid for blogging is like totally totally wow. I’d quit my current job and blog full-time! if only we had that chance XD
