Media Blasters Snags ‘Dokuro,’ Hints at More?

John Sirabella has announced over at the Anime on DVD forums that Media Blasters has acquired the license to “Doruka-chan” (he apparently meant Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan). But more than that, he also says the following:

I predict in 2-3 weeks you will hear an annoucement you never expected in the industry…becuase I heard it today and if true will blow some people away.

He later notes that it doesn’t involve Geneon, and predicts that there will be fewer anime companies in ‘08-’09. AoD founder Chris Beveridge apparently is also in the know and says that it’s not a good thing, though some people may be happy when it happens. (Why am I getting deja vu over Bandai Entertainment absorbing BVU?).

Other users are speculating that it relates to ADV, and are jumping all over the place: maybe ADV is being bought by Bandai Entertainment, or FUNimation. Maybe they’re shutting down– though I’m not sure I’d call that “unexpected” per se, and Beveridge seems to poo-poo the idea anyway…then again, Sirabella wonders if he and Beveridge are talking about the same thing. OH, THE DRAMA!

Some of the ideas are a little out there, like Navarre (FUNi parent company) buying out VIZ’s anime arm (…doubtful at best). It takes a while for people to start suggesting that the change could be in a Japanese company instead of a US company, and before long even Central Park Media is being speculated on. It’s an interesting thread; I recommend checking it out.

Oh, Sirabella also mentions that Seirei no Moribito is still gonna hit TV (Adult Swim, after Geass), sounds August-y with a DVD out in September. I know a few of you have asked about that, so there it is. :)

Hmmmmmmm… I’m getting big BVUSA deja vu as well. Interesting that they specified this news’ existence ahead of time if its technically a bad thing.

Totally predicting that BEI picks up the ADV catalog, with the “silver lining for some people” being that this neatly consolidates about 95% of the licenses for various Super Robot Wars titles into the hands of the publisher of the series (the Bandai mothership publishes all the titles in Japan.) It would put the full roster of several recent titles right into the hands of Bandai (SRW Advance and SRW MX) meaning they could be released at once.

Apparently Dokuro-chan was a Geneon rescue license (despite them never announcing it), if Sirabella’s unintentionally vague comments have anything to say about it.
