‘One Piece’ v50 Sells, Like, Eight Billion Copies Or Something

Okay, by 8 billion I mean 1 million. But that means that volume 50 of One Piece sold 1 million copies in one week. THAT IS A LOT OF COPIES. The actual total number, as of Oricon’s update, was 1,074,745…and it’s only rising, I’m sure.
Now, that doesn’t make it the top-selling manga to date. Nana volume 19 sold 1,374,035 in one week (I’ve been corrected, apparently that’s the 1-month sales figure for that volume– and a couple of people have mentioned that this isn’t One Piece’s highest figure, either, but does that make it any less spiffy?). But hey, Naruto v42 has only sold 922,000 copies in six weeks. Not bad for a shounen series that’s been running for 10 years, eh?
I found this figure pretty amazing. The series is absolutely brilliant but I never knew it was so popular to this scale.
I don’t read manga (bad me) and I’m not a fan of this series and I find this number to be staggering. Brilliant.
No thats the One Piece I love. Been following it for years, so I’m quite glad it’s reached this level of popularity.
Not really news. A One Piece volume sold 2.6 million in 2002 and another volume did 2.2 million in 2006. It’s actually dropping in sales, like almost everyone else. A Nana volume sold 2.3 million in 2005, and a Naruto volume sold 1.6 million in 2005.
Nana volume 19 is not the top-selling manga to date. That would be One Piece. Oricon is only reporting on this bit since it just started its revised book ranking system in April.
YAY!!!!!! YAY!!!!! YAY!!!!.. I love this series… so I am so happy that there are many like-minded fans out there as well..! Still with the price of things going up.. it’s not wonder prices are dropping.
Oppps.. I meant sales are dropping not prices..
You can’t compare yet, because those figures are just for the first week. Arguably though manga sales are dropping, so I don’t think the latest Nana or One Piece volumes can reach their previous sales records.
Why is Nana so famous ? >.>
I used to read One Piece when I was young (Maybe less than 20 volumes) and I remember it was quite good
Actually, this blog is incorrect in saying that Nana’s one-week sales is 1,374,035. That’s Nana’s total estimated sales after one month according to Oricon. It’s sold less than 80,000 copies last week, so it’s definitely not beating its own records, or One Piece’s old records either.
@CrystalFalls: Thanks for the correction. :)

Err, One Piece has always been madly popular in Japan… In fact way more popular than Naruto which is the most popular series of the two in Western countries (because it’s more exotic?)
In Japan, One Piece is the new Dragon Ball.
“Not really news. A One Piece volume sold 2.6 million in 2002 and another volume did 2.2 million in 2006. It’s actually dropping in sales, like almost everyone else.”
You can’t compare two individual volumes and say a series is dropping in sale. Volum sales tend to fluctuate quite a bit. Especially when you consider the 2.6 figure is basically near it’s peak volume sales (2.63 in Skypiea I think) which happens to be the best selling manga volume ever.
Though One Piece did have drop in sales for a bit (though still very high) during Water 7/Eneis Lobby arc, it’s back higher again with Thriller Bark. Volume 48 sold about 2.44 million so far.
Viz really needs to accelerate their release of this series! Poor non-scan reading US fans (myself included). I can’t learn Japanese fast enough!
