Yasuhiro Imagawa to Direct New ‘Mazinger’ Anime
Oh, Moon Phase, what would we do without you? The site reports that a new TV anime based on Go Nagai’s classic Mazinger Z– whch was originally adapted into anime from ‘72-’74 and continued in Great Mazinger and the Grendizer series after that –is in the works.
Edit: Correction: it’s Z Mazinger, a retelling of Mazinger Z using Greek mythology as a setup– more details on Wikipedia –that’s being made into a new anime, not the original. My bad! :)
According to Moon Phase, the new anime is going to be helmed by Yasuhiro Imagawa, of Giant Robo OVA and Tetsujin 28 fame, and it sounds like a 26-episode run has been arranged. The character design is going to be done in the classic, oldschool style, but the mechs will be done in a modern style.

Go Nagai mentioned this in an interview a while ago, he was working on a series that would include Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger, and Grendizer. I hope they kept that plan.
If I understand correctly, the redesign includes making Mazinger Z’s Jet Scrander wrap around the body, like Gundam Deathscythe Hell’s?

The original site says: 「Zマジンガー」をベースにしたアニメオリジナル展開で全26話予定。 Which obviously says Z Mazinger. Now, I don’t know Japanese, but Z Mazinger is very different from Mazinger Z. Can you clarify what the article says in full?

After rewatching Giant Robo for the first time in several months, I had a strange feeling I’d be hearing news about Mr. Imagawa soon, and while this is no new episode of GR, a Mazinger series by Imagawa is still very, very excellent news!
