AX08: ADV Sneak Peek Panel
Well, here I am…they just said they’ve just finished two episodes of Kiba and there’s a deal closing shortly. The panelist, whose name I didn’t catch, says he’s not going to go into a lot of the “what’s going on at ADV,” so we’ll see…
Because ADV’s deal with Soujitsu (”Sojitz“) has fallen apart, ADV may lose some of their licenses announced during that time, although not all of them, which is why things have been quiet; he describes it as being “like a long breakup.”
A couple of questions: Blu-Ray is a possibility but so far it hasn’t been doing amazingly well, so no rushing there. There’s apparently going to be a new Blu-Ray format next year. Huh.
Anime on DVD guy Jason has asked about the recent “indefinite suspensions” news, and there’s not much to be said about it, the ADV rep says they’re still working everything out.
ADV will probably not be announcing new licenses this con– but they DO have a couple of licenses in the works. So, take that, those who thought ADV was going to announce their demise! He says he has 23 titles potentially in the works, and he might even get a go-ahead on some of them by the end of expo, because “a lot of things happen” at this con.
Moving on to CrunchyRoll: ADV has had a couple of shows on IGN and CrunchyRoll; do they plan to do more? Rep says yes, they were the first to start doing it (…really? would have to check), but they’re planning on working on it.
Someone just asked about Bandai being on their way out…he meant Visual, of course. Anyway, his question had something to do with where ADV currently stands in the market. He says the Anime Network’s VOD has been very successful, but they’ve been slimming down to focus on video and broadcast.
Apparently the ADV guys got caught up in some kind of airport bomb threat that I haven’t heard anything about, btw.
I asked what that slimming means for ADV Manga, and the answer is just that it’s still going, but it’s a separate operation and the guy who runs ADV Manga isn’t here (”he’s never here!”), so not much more to say on that.
Last question for now: someone asked if they actually gave away free staplers along with the liquidation of office furniture.
Hokay, now they’re screening a bit of Kiba, looks like the OP sequence. And perhaps the entire first episode? Some of it, anyway, dubbed.
Kiba, for those who don’t know, is a show created in conjunction with a card game– the anime is Madhouse/Aniplex and the card game is Upper Deck. I kinda feel like I might have seen the first episode or some of it before, but maybe not?
The plot revolves around the main character, Zed, who is restless and unhappy with his life– he wants to “live fully,” which gets him in trouble with school. One day Zed finds and enters a portal, which transports him to a world torn apart by war where magic users fight with each other constantly.
It looks like all the rest of the panel is is the first two episodes of Kiba, so the above is prety much it for the liveblog, since I’m SO not gonna sit here and give a play-by-play of the show. Watch it yourselves when it comes out if you’re interested! ;)

That’s good to hear….. given the amount of time contracts and licensing issues take, I’m not totally surprised if Sojitsu’s still rearing itself on some titles.
I’m hoping their subsequent panel will clear up issues with their delayed titles, and that they can maybe announce some new titles over the weekend.

“So, take that, those who thought ADV was going to announce their demise!”
Likewise to those who thought they would be acquired by FUNimation. ;-)

It was probably the same bomb threat that Shokotan got caught up in:

& yeah, I’m pretty sure ADV was the first to start showing free anime on IGN. They’ve been doing it for a good while & I don’t recall anyone else doing it before them. Heck, I don’t think anyone other than FUNimation has even done it since them.

If the panelist whose name you didn’t catch is the one that’s pictured, it’s Matt Greenfield, one of the first ADR directors for ADV and one of its executives as well.

@Scott: Yeah, because honest speculation– which wasn’t all THAT far off from the truth, if you swap out a company name –is totally the same thing as the people who have actually been sitting around saying that ADV is dead, finito, completely.
Right?
