AX08: Don’t Shaft Dark Horse, Guys

So at the Dark Horse panel yesterday Carl Horn passed around a number of samples, including the Japanese volumes of Clover. Toward the end of the panel they were having trouble finding volume 4, and Anime on DVD notes in their panel report that the volume was never recovered.
That’s not cool, guys. If it was one of you, return it to the Dark Horse booth and they’ll accept it as a mistake. They need the book in order to get the Clover omnibus done in time!
I guess the moral of the story is don’t hand out necessary materials around a big room.
Poor Carl, well hopefully he gets it back.
This is material they actually needed? Is it not just a regular volume from Japan, so can’t they get another? I’m not defending the guys who took it. That’s just wrong and they should return it. Still, like Josh mentioned, probably not a good idea to pass around materials that you need for work later.
I hope Dark Horse gets it back.
That’s pretty lousy. I hope they were able to get the book back.
Naturally, we can get another copy of Vol. 4, and in fact we have other copies. Maybe I shouldn’t have made such a big thing about it, but we do enjoy passing around the Japanese editions, since it’s a good way to help people picture what the English book will look like. This is the first time in the last few years of con panels that I remember not getting them all back, which is a shame, but not a disaster.
It is true, though, that even with multiple copies of a manga around, almost every copy will end up getting used in some way. For example, one set might go to the translator, one to the letterer, one to the designer, one to the printer, one to the sales and marketing people, etc. So while we wouldn’t have passed it around if it was the only one available in the universe, that Vol. 4 would in fact have been used in some aspect of the production. But we consider informing the fans a part of that production, too, so…anyway, people are usually really good about giving them back. It was just bad luck this time.
