PSN’s Starting Anime Lineup

Let’s see…from BONES we have Xamdou already up– phenomenally, since it doesn’t even have a release date beyond “2008″ on Moon Phase –and then there’s the FUNimation titles:

  • Afro Samurai
  • Basilisk
  • Burst Angel
  • Desert Punk
  • Gunslinger Girl
  • Kiddy Grade
  • Moon Phase
  • Samurai 7
  • Trinity Blood
  • Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles
  • And Sony itself has a single offering: Astro Boy.

Me, I’m nabbing the first episode of Xamdou (or Xam’d, as it’s being called…makes me think of Punk’d). I’m getting the low-res version for $2.99, which is viewable for up to 14 days– that’s right, it’s rental, not download-to-own. The SD version is 400mb, btw, and omonomono mentioned in the comments that the HD version is 1500mb. Ouch.

      im disappointed.

    2. Shiroi Hane Says:

Those are flipping large file sizes for 25mins of anime using modern codecs.. there’s no excuse for not using h.264 given the platform. I assume this stuff will be regionalised?

    3. Kougeru Says:

I heard it takes a long time to download the SD versions… for me, 10 minutes DDL for 400MB would be a long time…anyone know how long it takes for an SD? and yeah…wtf is with the file sizes…no 30 minute program should be more than 500MB on 1080P in todays tech

    4. Kougeru Says:

oh also, any language choices? I doubt it but if so I’d definately be getting GSG

    5. omo Says:

400mb for 24 minutes is not unreasonable, even if it is large; However like Sony said, it’s something streamable, so you can watch it immediately once you start downloading.

1500mb for 24 minutes is not streamable for anyone on an average residential connection (unless you’re like Moyism, the bastard), but you’re talking about 1080 at 10 megabits with a 5.1 audio track, so… I’d cut them some slack.

And FWIW it is AVC, so it’s just how they did it that makes it so big.

    6. Niko Says:

Those are pretty big for 24 minutes. Plus, $3 for just a rental is a little much.

    7. Zeouterlimits Says:

360’s Funimation choices are much better value. *sigh*

    8. gia Says:

Kougero: Now language choices, but the episodes are subbed in English.

Zeouterlimits: yeah, but FUNimation’s stuff on 360– AND on PS3 –is stuff that’s been out for ages. @_@

    9. Zeouterlimits Says:

      Good point.
