Otakon08: Kadokawa Pictures USA

Kadokawa! Pictures! USA! The actual licensors of Haruhi and Lucky Star (they contract out to other companies like Bandai Entertainment). There WILL be a new announcement, and hopefully more news on the titles announced at Expo?

Expo titles, still distributor-less– H2O, Ninomiya-kun, Rental Magika, Coo Our Guardian (aka Wagaya no Oinarisama), Junjou Romantica, Spice and Wolf…

New title, not out in Japan yet: Ga-Rei Zero, so we will get it in the U.S. It’s a prequel to the manga. Ditto Macademy.

I asked if there’s a shot at simultaneous US/Japan releases for either show? Probably not. For Spice and Wolf, will we get ep7 which was dvd only in Japan? Yes, probably.

Was Harhi expected to be so big? Yes the novels were sooooo popular…but the international hit it is was a bit surprising.

Do licensors and distributors approach Kadokawa? Both ways I assume but she instead answers that Kadokawa doesn’t show preference to companies.

Live-action licensing? With AnimEigo they do some older titles but that’s it. Possible second season of Spice and Wolf? Haruhi’s second season WILL come. Sigh. Any release of light novels? Yes, one will be announced soon– the titles he asked about were Coo Our Guardian and Spice and Wolf; I’m banking on the latter (and praying).

They are considering simul releases maybe for a really popular series sometime…but no plans yet. Protip: Haruhi 2?

The end!

I’d rather have the Wagaya no Oinari-sama novels, but is Coo Our Guardian really the best translation for the title? I really don’t imagine it coming out that stupid sounding.

You were at the panel? I was the person that asked about Kadokawa’s relationship with animation studios. If you’re still here, would a random meetup be possible? :P
