Much Ado About Shugo Chara!

So Shugo Chara! has added a late-night showing to its schedule, spurring commenters to suggest that she was getting a late show a la Soul Eater, although there doesn’t seem to be any official word of additional content, so I wouldn’t go expecting anything extra just yet. Commenters also note that this move seems to imply that the show is aiming more for the otaku crowd– although it’s going to continue airing Saturdays at 9:30am, of course, so it’s not like it’s going to stop being a kids’ show too.

When I heard that report, I remembered an article on Canned Dogs about the next year of Shugo Chara!, in which we learn that the animation for the series isn’t high-quality due to high budget, but because they had the scenarios worked out so far in advance that the animation staff had more time– resulting in higher-quality animation. Apparently one episode (#43) had 8,000 key frames, about twice the usual number for a TV show, more on par with an anime film.

But wait, there’s more! Did I mention that there’s a Shugo Chara! Matsuri going on at Aqua City in Odaiba? It’s happening September 20-21 and features concerts by Hello! Project and the Shugo Chara! staff, as well as a kids area, original illustrations on exhibit, and other stuff.

So, the bottom line? Shugo Chara! is getting pretty big. It might even be the biggest shoujo magical girl series since, I dunno, Card Captors– not including, as omo pointed out, Pretty Cure? (I’m also not including the more shounen-oriented magical girl shows like My-HiME and Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha in that suggestion.) Hmm!

I thought the reining queen of magical girls is pretty cure.

omo: Oh yeah…I always forget Pretty Cure since I can’t stand it @_@ So I hope Shugo Chara is doing well enough to compete with it! ;)

For me the one and only magical girl show will forever be Sailor Moon.

Hinano: Yeah, Sailor Moon was my gateway back in the day. Though I really enjoy Shugo Chara quite a lot ^-^

Well Shugo Chara definitely is getting up there with CCS popularity. It kind of beats Pretty Cure with the fact that it’s got more appeal to more fans. Pretty Cure’s pretty much just aimed at the little kids.

It’s not hard to see why it’s getting up there with CCS though. It’s been a while since there’s been a magical girl series that’s been about more than just…magical girls blasting random monsters and enemies.

Pretty Cure is/was relatively popular with kids, but yeah, Shugo Chara pulls the otaku crowd better.
