NYAF08: FUNimation

Okay, I’m now sitting in on the FUNimation panel, hosted by Adam Sheehan. So far it’s pretty much the same stuff we’ve heard at the last few panels, but we’re not yet through the panel! Apparently they’ll be putting some show that we’ll “probably be really happy about” (I already heard at least a couple of scattered One Piece? whispers– we’ll see. The FUNimation Channel panel is right after this one, so I’ll sit through both.

So, I just checked my e-mail and noticed…hey, I’ve got a press release from FUNi! So congrats, guys, you have this announcement before anyone sitting in this actual panel: FUNimation has acquired the live-action Mushishi film. I, for one, am SO EXCITED– the movie looks gorgeous.

On a tangentially-related note (though not part of the panel), I’ve been informed by FUNimation that the Dragonball GT DVD box set will be 4:3, not widescreen. I think at AWA I mistakenly said that it was letterbox. Just fyi!

There is a small chance that Ouran Host Club will be on sale early at Anime USA. I am incredibly sad because I won’t be there! Must have a talk with Mr. Sheehan sometime later about this. *coughs*

People are being REALLY LOUD while they’re leaving the panel, grr. But Adam is talking about DRM, and whether they’ll do it so that their anime downloads can be used on iTunes, but they are not going to for the time being. Also, the former Geneon titles will have both the Geneon and FUNimation logo in the future, although the more recent releases were done in such a hurry that they didn’t slap them on before the stuff went out.

Apparently FUNimation IS looking at some older Geneon titles (there was passing mention of Trigun)– if they got them they wouldn’t change any of the Geneon dubbing or anything, basically print new copies with a FUNi logo and slap them on a shelf.

I think we’re going to move on to the FUNimation Channel panel shortly…there we go.

So, blah blah blah it’s part of Verizon FiOS and SureWest, how to get the channel, the usual there. LOTS of recent additions, like Burst Angel, Jyu Oh Sei, Black Blood Brothers, Solty Rei, Negima!? s2, xxxHOLiC, aaaaand…

New show: Ouran High School Host Club! (I guess my mention of the tv possibilities came true.) Sweet!

Don’t let them ruin Trigun! Why would they re-release it! It’s fine as it is!

If they just wanna make a cheap slim pack.. FINE.. but do NOT TOUCH the sub or dub. It’s a one of the gems from the early 2000’s

    O really? :P

That makes me more likely to attend now. :3

Scott: Like I said…they wouldn’t change anything, just reprint it and put it on shelves, basically, but with a FUNimation logo.

TheBigN: Yes, I was told they SHOULD have it but Sheehan never likes to say that they WILL just in case something goes wrong. I’m frantically trying to find someone who’ll be there to pick me up a copy! ;)

[...] Funimation’s panel was forgettable; the Gundam 00 panel wasn’t much better — though Brad Swaile did his best to entertain. The Gundam 00 premier was actually not bad. I’ll probably try to watch this on SciFi Channel when it starts airing in November, but I doubt I’ll be buying the DVDs. [...]
