NYAF08: Media Blasters

Was late to Media Blasters but am here now! They have a big announcement that they can’t make until after the con, woo. We’re already in q&a it seeeeeems…Genshiken 2 at the beginning of next year (Jan or Feb), Ikki Tousen by Feb, also dubbed…and apparently they tried to get Bruce Campbell to voice Guts in Berserk. God, that would have been cool! ;.;

Oneechan Bara video game due in February, movie three weeks after (huh!).

Other stuff coming from Tokyo Shock…Tokyo Gore Police just came out. Mikhail asks about the rumors of a sequel or related film to Gore Police which we’re told seems pretty likely.

Some talk on fansubbing…apparently the reps actually kinda like fansubs (in terms of their own anime addictions), although some fansubbers are incredibly angry for no apparent reason at the fansubbers & industry panel at Otakon (kinda wish I’d been there). But we’ve also just been told that retailers screw over the anime industry more than anyone else, which is certainly a different perspective than the “fansubbers and downloaders are killing the industry” theme we’ve seen so often lately.

Another interesting item: the concept that Cartoon Network is a 24-hour commercial to sell DVDs and swag, and that companies pay to get their shows ON the network– something I’ve heard before specifically about getting anime on Adult Swim, so there’s some confirmation.

Second half of GaoGaiGar dub? Snowball’s chance in hell; it costs too much to dub.

Apparently the writer for Twelve Kingdoms– not the novels but the writer for the anime –had a nervous breakdown or something and that’s why there’s no more of the anime.

Machine Girl is on iTunes, Sony (the PSN, presumably), and they’re getting it on Netflix streaming as well…and a couple of other places but I think I missed it.

How about burn-on-demand/DVD-on-demand stuff? Not an option for smaller anime companies unless someone comes up with a system that can be licensed cheaply to the smaller companies, because it’d basically be too much for a small company to put together on their own.

Bitterness over Blu-Ray’s win in the next-gen battle, due to Sony’s expensive licensing fees and apparently it’s also harder to work with than HDDVD.

Simultaneous stuff? Apparently Gonzo won’t sell to Media Blasters and doesn’t like them for some reason. Some other gossip: apparently some Gonzo employees quit a while back due to not liking how the company was doing things.

Some fans don’t seem to have a very good idea of how much work goes into not just subtitling a show, but actually printing it onto DVDs and coming up with a box and all those sorts of things. Can I just note, just because you could theoretically subtitle an anime in a couple of hours and get it online fast doesn’t mean that it’s that simple to put together an official, physical anime release…not even including the approvals process where you sit and wait for the Japanese company to give it the OK, there’s a LOT! of work in mass-printing DVDs, boxes, etc.

    I figured companies paid to get their shows on Cartoon Network and AS, and if I were Bandai Ent, I would have threatened to stop payment after pulling that 5 a.m. stunt.

    I didn’t expect any chance of any more GaoGaiGar dub, but I really hope they bring over the GaoGaiGar Final ova.

    The fansubbing and retailer comment is interesting. I would like to hear more about that. I don’t get why fansubbers would have hated that panel. I watched it on ANN, and being of opinions somewhat in the middle with leanings towards fansubbers, I didn’t see a problem with it.

    Bruce Campbell as Guts is just too perfect, it’s a shame it couldn’t have happened for the anime. But now I have to worry about hearing his voice every time I read the manga :cry:
