The Fall Call: Fall 2008 Anime Preview

Posted by gia
Categorized Under: Features, Season Previews
Dated: 3 Oct 2008

I know, I know, I’m late– things have gotten very busy with my project. But here it is: your Fall 2008 anime preview!

A couple of interesting trends this season. First off, I was struck by how many shows this season are the directorial debuts for the people helming them. Hyakko (Michio Fukuda), Kyou no Go no Ni (Tsuyoshi Nagasawa), Macademi Wasshioi! (Takaomi Kanesaki), Michiko to Hacchin (Sayo Yamamoto), and Mouryou no Hako (Ryosuke Nakamura) are all, as near as I can tell, directorial debuts (with said newbie directors in parantheticals, of course).

Another trend? Live-action actresses voicing roles. Shikabane Hime features Nana Akiyama, while both Michiko and Hacchin are voiced by film actresses: Yoko Maki and Suzuka Ougo, respectively.

And finally…well, is it really a trend anymore? Sequels. Lots and lots and lots of sequels. But it’s okay, because they include such titles as Gundam 00 and Shugo Chara!. ?

You’ll note a little change this season– I’ve included trailers whenever possible, rather than a regular image. Let me know what you think.

Cheat sheet’ll go up tomorrow. On with the show!

Title: Akaneiro ni Somaru Saka
JP Title: あかね色に染まる坂
Studio: TNK
Genre: Harem
Starts: October 3rd
Airs: ChibaTV, Fridays at 1am
Link: http://www.mmv.co.jp/special/akasaka
Summary:
Oh, woe is Junichi Nagase: one day at his prestigious high school, he has a quarrel with a classmate named Yuuhi Katagiri, who just transferred to the school that day. Then he learns that Yuuhi is his fiancee. To top it off, Yuuhi changes into a boy when splashed with cold– oh, wait, wrong show. His parents, who arranged the marriage, command Junichi and Yuuhi to go out together once a month to fix their already battered relationship.

Notable:

  • Based, of course, on an eroge of the same name, and released by Feng in July 2007.
  • The mainstreamified version of the game (released on the PS2) featured some serious seiyuu, and the anime keeps them: Rie Kugimiya (Shakugan no Shana’s Shana, Zero no Tsukaima’s Louise) voices Yuuhi, while Aya Hirano (Haruhi, of course) plays Junichi’s younger sister Minato.
  • Director Keitaro Motonaga is best known for his work helming the controversial anime adaptation of the eroge School Days, along with Princess Princess, Amaenaideyo!!, and a dozen other series– usually shounen romances.
Title: Casshern Sins
JP Title: キャシャーン Sins
Studio: Madhouse
Genre: Sci-Fi
Starts: October 2nd
Airs: TeleTama, Thursdays at 1:30am
Link: http://casshern-sins.jp
Summary:
You’ve probably at least heard of Casshern (occasionally romanized as “Casshan,” though the 2004 movie adaptation used “Casshern”). It started as a ’70s cyborg series that was developed into the aforementioned live-action tokusatsu film, re-energizing the franchise into the new anime adaptation you will see shortly!

Notable:

  • A complete reboot of the series, Casshern Sins features various cyborgs as the destroyers of humanity: the titular Casshern destroys our one hope, and humans are on the brink of extinction. Robots and cyborgs aren’t much better off, fearing their own destruction by corrosion. In the midst of this, Casshern himself has lots its memories and defends humans against robots while learning about his own history.
  • The franchise itself isn’t the only familiar name: Casshern will be voiced by Tohru Furuya, best known for playing Ray Amuro in original Gundam.
  • Shigeyasu Yamauchi, best known for helming all of Dragonball Z and Saint Seiya, is directing the new Casshern.
Title: CHAOS;HEAD
JP Title:
Studio: Madhouse
Genre: Sci-Fi
Starts: October 9th
Airs: ChibaTV, Thursdays at 11pm
Link: http://www.chaoshead.jp
Summary:
Like so many other games and anime (looking at you, World Ends With You), Chaos;Head takes place in Shibuya, Tokyo, where strange events– like a group of kids jumping off a rooftop to their deaths or a man’s dead body being found with a fetus implanted in his stomach –have been taking place. In this Shibuya we find Takumi, a high school student who gets dragged into the strange happenings by a mysterious person going by the online handle “Shogun.”

Notable:

  • The anime will feature the same voice cast as the games, including Eri Kitamura (Blood+’s Saya) as love interest Rimi and Ui Miyazaki (a princess of moe, with roles like Night Wizard’s Elis and Gift ~eternal rainbow~’s Kirino) as Takumi’s younger sister. Takumi will be voiced by Hiroyuki Yoshino (Blood+’s Kai, Gundam 00’s Allelujah/Hallelujah Haptism).
  • Director Takaaki Ishiyama is probably best known for the wacky Viewtiful Joe anime, though he also storyboards Naruto.
  • Expect plenty of action in the script; it’s being written by Toshiki Inoue– of Dragon Ball, Kamen Rider, and Fist of the North Star fame.
Title: Clannad ~After Story~
JP Title:
Studio: Kyoto Animation
Genre: Harem/Comedy
Starts: October 3rd
Airs: TBS, Fridays at 2am
Link: http://www.tbs.co.jp/clannad
Summary:
The continued adventures of mostly-cool-but-occasionally-emo high school student Tomoya and the assorted extremely-cute-but-absolutely-batshit-insane girls he interacts with frequently. Expect plenty of humor, with the occasional heartbreak and/or self-discovery mixed in and played up like whoa.

Notable:

  • As those of you familiar with the game would expect, ~After Story~ animates the “After Story” arc of the original visual novel of Clannad, which expands on the story of Nagisa, the soft-spoken heroine of the first season.
  • Tatsuya Ishihara returns as director– like you could have a Kyoto Animation Key adaptation without him? (He did Air and Kanon as well– not to mention The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.)
Title: ef: a tale of melodies.
JP Title:
Studio: Shaft
Genre: Shounen/Romance
Starts: October 7th
Airs: TV Kanagawa, Tuesdays at 2:15am
Link: http://www.ef-melo.com
Summary:
Boy, these visual novels sure do get their sequels, don’t they? Ef: A Tale of Melodies. is the continuation of Ef: A Tale of Memories. (so, ef-melo, as opposed to ef-memo). Don’t worry, the creepy moe nun is back!

Notable:

  • There are no shakeups in the cast or crew of ef-melo versus that of ef-memo: from director Shin Oonuma (who also directed the Negima!? Spring and Summer OVAs) to theme song performer Elisa, everyone’s back for round two.
Title: Ga-Rei -Zero-
JP Title: 喰霊-零-
Studio: AIC Spirits
Genre: Action/Supernatural
Starts: October 6th
Airs: ChibaTV, Mondays at midnight
Link: http://www.ga-rei.jp
Summary:
At last! A traditional manga-to-anime adaptation! Ga-Rei -Zero- is a take on Segawa Hajime’s supernatural drama Ga-Rei, which features the depressed, ghost-seeing Kensuke Nimura. Kensuke is drafted into a monster-fighting agency by an attractive young woman named Kagura, who wields a spirit known as a “Ga-Rei” to fight the monsters.

Notable:

  • Director Ei Aoki has the moe thing down: previous credits include Girls Bravo and Kara no Kyoukai: Garden of Sinners. Plus storyboarding a little Sex Demon Queen on the side!
  • Eri Kitamura, who is already playing a lead in Chaos;HEAd, performs as Kagura this time around.
  • Relative newcomer Tomoaki Maeno lays the lead this time around, with his previous starring turns including Atsushi Dojo in Toshokan Sensou (yay!) and Gouta in the recent Someday’s Dreamers anime.
Title: Gundam 00 Second Season
JP Title: 機動戦士ガンダムOO セカンドシーズン
Studio: Sunrise
Genre: Mecha
Starts: October 5th
Airs: TV Tokyo, Sundays at 5pm
Link: http://www.gundam00.net
Summary:
Now this is a sequel I’m excited for: the second half of the latest Gundam iteration, we’ll get to see what happened to the Gundam Meisters after the cataclysmic events of the first half. I would expect most of them to not be dead, even if they seemed as such. This is Gundam, after all.

Notable:

  • Not too many staff changes: Eiji Wakamatsu takes over art direction (for the first time!) from Takeshi Satou (Birdy the Mighty DECODE, Please Twins), and that’s about it.
  • Gundam fans who love their Bleach soundtracks, rejoice! UVERworld (who performed Bleach’s second OP) will perform the first OP for 00 (I’m guessing there’ll be two again), with Chiaki Ishikawa (best known for the Bokurano OP) performing the ED.
Title: Hakushaku to Yousei
JP Title: 伯爵と妖精
Studio: Artland
Genre: Fantasy/Shoujo
Starts: September 28th
Airs: AT-X, Mondays at Midnight
Link: http://www.myfairy.tv
Summary:
Lydia is a fairy doctor whose life is turned around when she meets Count Edgar, who retains her to help him find his family’s heirloom: a sword.

Notable:

  • Expect there to be some excellent humor in this shoujo adventure story: director Koichiro Soutome made his debut directing Kankei Zenraku Suiebu Umisho (you know, the one with the skinny dipper on the swim team?)
  • Nana Mizuki (Nanoha’s Fate Testarossa, Shugo Chara!’s Utau Hoshina, etc) will play the Lydia to Hikaru Midorikawa’s (Code Geass‘ Li Xingke, Gundam Wing’s Heero Yuy) Count Edgar.
  • Kyon alert! Tomokazu Sugita (who voiced the sarcastic narrator of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) has a role in this series: Raven, Edgar’s mysterious but loyal bodyguard.
Title: Hokuto no Ken Raou Gaiden: Ten no Haou
JP Title: 北斗の拳 ラオウ外伝 天の覇王
Studio: Satelight
Genre: Action
Starts: October 3rd
Airs: TV Aichi, Fridays at 1:30am
Link: http://www.haoh.tv
Summary:
I predict that more heads will explode and super-manly one-liners will be uttered in the eleventy billionth entry into the Fist of the North Star franchise. Also, I was able to find a PV, but it’s not embeddable, so here’s the link.

Notable:

  • I’m curious about this: Kenji Utsumi voiced Raou in the original FotNS TV series and OVAs, but the recent movies have featured Takashi Ukaji instead. Who do you guys like better?
  • Mai Nakahara (My-HiME’s Mai Tokiha, Clannad’s Nagisa, etc) makes her first entry into the macho world of Hokuto no Ken by voicing Reina.
  • There’s another newcomer to the franchise: director Masashi Abe, who directed Blue Gender and Tokko.
Title: Hyakko
JP Title: ヒャッコ
Studio: Nippon Animation
Genre: Comedy/Slice of Life
Starts: October 2nd
Airs: TV Tokyo, Thursdays at 3:25am
Link: http://hyakko.jp
Summary:
We have no Hidamari Sketch this season, so Hyakko is here to give you the schoolgirl slice-of-life you crave! But it’s a somewhat less moe-looking formula (thank god). You’ve got Torako, the hyper troublemaker; Tatsuki, the ojou-sama; Torakon’s unpredictable middle school friend Suzume; and Ayumi: the “normal” one who always gets dragged into the mischief.

Notable:

  • Haruhi alert! Aya Hirano will be voicing Ayumi (yes, she’s voicing the normal one, not the energetic bossy troublemaker– huzzah for casting against type).
  • Speaking of casting against type: Fumiko Orikasa, best known for her turn a Rukia in Bleach, will play the aforementioned energetic bossy troublemaker. (Though she’s not all that typecast to begin with, having also played Code Geass‘ bastion of relative normalcy, Shirley.) Tatsuki will be voiced by Michiko Neya (Fullmetal Alchemist’s Riza, Full Metal Panic’s Melissa), and Suzume’s voice will be provided by Yurika Ochiai (ToHeart’s Konomi, Futakoi’s Rara).
  • This will be the directorial debut of Michio Fukuda, who has storyboarded and art directed all over the place– including shows like Gankutsuou, Death Note, Ouran High School Host Club, and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (which he actually did key animation for).
Title: Inazuma Eleven
JP Title: イナズマイレブン
Studio: OLM
Genre: Sports
Starts: October 5th
Airs: TV Tokyo, Sundays at 9am
Link: http://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/anime/inazuma
Summary:
It’s a soccer anime based on a soccer game made by Level-5 for DS. There’s not a lot known about its story, but I’d wager on plenty of action, a few tournaments, and self-discovery in the midst of the battlefield– err, soccer field.Notable:

  • Naruto alert! Junko Takeuchi, most beloved for voicing the youthful ninja, will play Mamoru Endou, the captain of the soccer team.
  • Director Katsuhito Akiyama brings a unique resume to the project: he helmed the BL sci-fi drama Ai no Kusabi, Thundercats, Guyver, and all of the Gall Force OVAs.
Title: Jigoku Shoujo Mitsuganae
JP Title: 地獄少女 三鼎
Studio: Studio Deen
Genre: Horror
Starts: October 4th
Airs: Tokyo MX TV, Saturdays at 5pm
Link: http://www.jigokushoujo.com
Summary:
Okay, I admit it: I can’t believe that they’re doing a third season of this episodic series. That said, if you haven’t caught any of the previous seasons, it’s well worth watching a few eps. It’s a beautifully animated horror series revolving around the idea that at midnight you can access a website that will give you an opportunity to get revenge on your tormenter…at the cost of your soul.

Notable:

  • Takahiro Oomori, who directed the first and second seasons of the show, has apparently stepped down to post-recording direction; it’s not entirely clear who’s doing the performance direction at this point.
  • Have you ever noticed that Japan is much more loathe to change voice actors than America? It seems like most of the time they’d prefer not to do a show than to change the cast. That said: no cast changes this season.
Title: Junjou Romantica 2
JP Title: 純情ロマンチカ2(に)
Studio: Studio Deen
Genre: BL/Romance
Starts: October 12th
Airs: TV Kanagawa, Sundays at 1am
Link: http://www.suzukisan.info
Summary:
Yaoi. Okay, now that most of the readers are ignoring this…it’s the further adventures of a handful of guys in a love tangle that defies definition.

Notable:

  • The staff is so utterly unchanged for season 2, even the OP is being performed by the same group: pigstar!
Title: Kannagi
JP Title: かんなぎ
Studio: A-1 Pictures
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Starts: October 4th
Airs: Tokyo MX TV, Saturdays at 11:30pm
Link: http://www.nagisama-fc.com
Summary:
The moral of Kannagi is to never carve a statute in a haunted tree. When Jin does, it turns into a goddess named Nagi who drafts him into helping her purify the town.

Notable:

  • Remember Yutaka Yamamoto? The director of the first four episodes of Lucky Star, who was removed? Well, he’s back for his second directorial attempt with Kannagi.
  • Nagi will be voiced by Haruka Tomatsu, who played Lala in the To-LoveRu anime. Tomatsu is also performing the OP and ED songs.
  • Joining Tomatsu is Hiro Shimono as Jin; Shimono’s other credits include KaleidoStar’s Ken and Cluster Edge’s Agate.
Title: Kemeko Deluxe!
JP Title: ケメコデラックス!
Studio: Hal Filmmaker
Genre: Sci-Fi/Comedy
Starts: October 12th
Airs: TV Kanagawa, Sundays at 2am
Link: http://kemeko.jp
Summary:
How’s this for surreal: a weird, vaguely chibi-ish looking robot (Kemeko) appears in a boy’s room and declares him (Sanpeita) to be her husband. Then the robot opens its mouth and a hot chick (Emuemu) comes out…wait, no, I guess that’s pretty standard in anime. The anime version of “How I Met Your Mother,” perhaps.

Notable:

  • It’s triple duty for Eri Kitamura: she’s in Ga-Rei, Chaos;Head, and she also plays Sanpeita in this show. Joining her are Chiwa Saito (Pani Poni Dash’s Becky, Strike Witches’ Francesca) voicing Kemeko and Haruka Tomatsu (Kannagi’s Nagi).
  • Director Tsutomu Mizushima has been busy lately: from spring 2007’s Ookiku Furikabutte to spring 2008’s xxxHOLiC Kei. He also directed Genshiken and Kujibiki Unbalance.
Title: Kuroshitsuji
JP Title: 黒執事
Studio: A-1 Pictures
Genre: Horror/Comedy
Starts: October 3rd
Airs: MBS, Fridays at 1:25am
Link: http://www.kuroshitsuji.tv
Summary:
A young, wealthy, spoiled brat has a gorgeous demonic butler who can perform any task his master requests. Apparently this is enough of a premise to create an anime. But hey, it’ll be pretty.

Notable:

  • Based on the manga of the same name by Yana Toboso, who is best known for…the manga of the same name.
  • You can’t deny the star power: Maaya Sakamoto (Host Club’s Haruhi, Gundam SEED’s Lunamaria) will play Ciel Phantomhive, the unfortunately-named wealthy brat mentioned earlier. Joining her is Daisuke Ono (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya’s Itsuki Koizumi, Air’s Yukito) playing Sebastien Michaelis, the demon butler.
  • Toshiya Shinohara is best known for directing the InuYasha movies, but he has his own history with suavity: he directed Lupin III: Crisis in Tokyo.
Title: Kurozuka
JP Title: 黒塚 -KUROZUKA-
Studio: Madhouse
Genre: Drama
Starts: October 7th
Airs: Animax, Tuesdays at 10pm
Link: http://www.animax.co.jp/feature/index.php?program=NN10000730
Summary:
In 12th century Japan, a man named Kuro meets a woman named Kuromitsu and they fall in love. But she has a secret: she’s an immortal, destined to live for thousands of years past his death.

Notable:

  • My first thought looking at this cast list is “DO TOTALLY WANT.” Mamoru Miyano (Host Club’s Tamaki, Death Note’s Light, Gundam 00’s Setsuna) plays Kuro, while Romi Paku (Fullmetal Alchemist’s Ed, Bleach’s Hitsugaya, Naruto’s Temari) as Kuromitsu. It’ll be a feast for the ears.
  • Director Tetsuro Araki is coming off the the career high known as Death Note, so expect plenty of excellent drama in this series.
Title: Kyou no Go no Ni
JP Title: 今日の5の2
Studio: XEBEC
Genre: Comedy/Slice of Life
Starts: October 6th
Airs: TV Tokyo, Mondays at 1:30am
Link: http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/gononi
Summary:
Mm, a delicious TV adaptation of Koharu Sakuraba’s slightly pervy middle school slice-of-life comedy. The manga was originally adapted into a hilarious OVA, leaving many fans aching for more of the middle school crew’s clumsy stumbling through life, love, and– zomg oh noes! –curiosity about sex. Expect the amount of sex content to go down since it’ll be a TV series, not a direct to DVD OVA, but you can also expect it to be just as funny as before.

Notable:

  • You may already be familiar with Koharu Sakuraba’s work: the very popular TV anime Minamike is also based on a manga of his.
  • Always ready to make a liar out of me, the TV series will feature a different cast than the OVA. Ryota (previously played by Houko Kawashima) will be played by Yu Kobayashi (Negima!?’s Setsuna, Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei’s Kaere Kimura). Chika, formerly Mai Kadowaki, now Asami Shimoda (her first lead role); Megumi Hidaka, formerly Kana Ueda, now Kana Asumi (Gurren Lagann’s Kiyal, Hidamari Sketch’s Yuno); Kazumi, formerly Mamiko Noto, now Mako (Kamichu!’s Yurie); Tsubasa Kawai, formerly Minori Chihara (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya’s Yuki), now Ayahi Takagaki (D.C.II’s Otome, Special A’s Megumi).
  • The TV series will also have a completely different cast and production company (the OVA was produced by Shinkuukan). The TV series will be directed by relative newbie Tsuyoshi Nagasawa; the OVA was directed by Makoto Sokuza.
Title: Macademi WAsshoi!
JP Title: まかでみ・WAっしょい!
Studio: ZEXCS
Genre: Comedy/Fantasy
Starts: October 6th
Airs: ChibaTV, Mondays at 12:30am
Link: http://www.macademi.tv
Summary:
Think of it as Zero no Tsukaima in reverse: magician student Takuto Hasegawa accidentally summons up a girl named Tanarot, who has the power to destroy the entire country!…if her master, Takuto, were to command it anyway.

Notable:

  • This anime is based on the light novel series by Ichirou Sakaki and illustrated by Blade, with 9 volumes released from January 2003 to August 2007. So it looks like they waited until the story was complete before starting on the anime (which was originally announced in December 2007)! That’s usually a good sign in terms of staying true to the original content.
  • Ami Koshimizu, best known recently for Code Geass‘ Kallen, will be voicing Takuto. Tanarot will be voiced by Mariya Ise, Yes! Precure 5’s Urara– she’ll also perform the theme song.
  • Director Takaomi Kanesaki will debut as a director with this title; past credits include storyboard for Onegai My Melody and key animation for Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.
Title: Michiko to Hacchin
JP Title: ミチコとハッチン
Studio: Manglobe
Genre: Adventure
Starts: October 15th
Airs: FujiTV, Wednesdays at 2am
Link: http://www.michikotohatchin.com
Summary:
Hachi Morenos is a young girl who has run away from her oppressive parents. Michiko is a self-declared “sexy diva” with a gun. And their adventures are…Michiko to Hacchin!

Notable:

  • Yet another directorial debut here, this time from Sayo Yamamoto, who assistant-directed the Trava OVA and storyboarded Death Note and Samurai Champloo.
  • Our leading ladies are also relative newcomers to anime: Suzuka Ougo was an award-winning child actress who played a young Chiyo in the recent Memoirs of a Geisha film; she’s playing Hacchin. Michiko will be voiced by Yoko Maki, another live-action actress who played Aya in The Princess Blade and Maki in Battle Royale II. Ougo did play “Sexy Voice” in the live-action adaptation of the Sexy Voice and Robo manga, however, and ANN claims that Maki was an assistant producer on the Cosplay Complex OVA (which seems odd to me, but eh.)
Title: Mouryou no Hako
JP Title: 魍魎の匣
Studio: Madhouse
Genre: Supernatural/Mystery
Starts: October 8th
Airs: NipponTV, Wednesdays at 1:30am
Link: http://www.ntv.co.jp/mouryou
Summary:
After a series of strange murders in which school girls are killed and their bodies shoved into boxes, the mother of a missing girl hires a private investigator, who searches for the culprit along with a rag-tag group of friends.

Notable:

  • This mystery drama is being directed by Ryosuke Nakamura, his– you guessed it –directorial debut.
  • And here’s your Mouryou no Hako all-star lineup! Hidenobu Kiuchi (Nana’s Ren Honjo, Darker than Black’s Hei) as Tatsumi Sekiguchi! Hiroaki Hirata (Black Lagoon’s Benny, One Piece’s Sanjo) as Akihiko Chuzenji! Houko Kuwashima (Clannad’s Tomoyo, InuYasha’s Sango) as Atsuko Chuzenji! And more!
  • If the visuals look a bit familiar for this title, it’s because like Code Geass, Mouryou no Hako features character designs by CLAMP.
Title: Nodame Cantabile Parihen
JP Title: のだめカンタービレ 巴里編
Studio: J.C. Staff
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Starts: October 10th
Airs: FujiTV, Fridays at 12:45am
Link: http://www.nodame-anime.com
Summary:
Nodameeee! Cantabiiiiiiiiile! Yes, everyone’s favorite Asperger’s pianist, Megumi Noda, returns with her uptight sort-of boyfriend Chiaki Shinichi as they travel to far off Paris! Gay Paris! It should be good times. It’s Nodame! What more do you even need to know?

Notable:

  • There is a bit of a staff shakeup: first season director Kenichi Kasai has left in favor of Chiaki Kon, who’s already working on Junjou Romantica 2 as well. Series composer Tomoko Konparu has also left, with Yoji Enokido (the script writer of FLCL) taking his place. Don’t worry though: the music is still being done by season one’s Suguru Matsutani.
  • How about this for a notable item: no one has licensed the first season of Nodame Cantabile! What’s up with that, American anime companies? Especially since I’d consider Nodame to be a title with some potential for crossover.
Title: One-Outs
JP Title: ワンナウツ
Studio: Madhouse
Genre: Sports
Starts: October 8th
Airs: NipponTV, Wednesdays at 1am
Link: http://www.ntv.co.jp/oneouts
Summary:
One Outs revolves around a young man who gets a shot at becoming a pro baseball player: Toua Tokuchi, who got in on a bet with Nakane, a trainer, and Kojima, another player. They play for the Rikaons (apparently “Rikaon” is some kind of African wild dog?).

Notable:

  • One Outs is based on the manga by Shinobu Kaitani, whose work you may already be familiar with: his Liar Game manga was developed into a popular j-drama.
  • In conjunction with the anime, the manga has re-started under the title One Outs: Miwaku no All-Star-Hen.
Title: Rosario to Vampire Capu2
JP Title: ロザリオとバンパイア CAPU2
Studio: Gonzo
Genre: Harem/Comedy
Starts: October 2nd
Airs: TV Osaka, Thursdays at 2:25am
Link: http://www.rosa-vam.com
Summary:
What more can one say about Rosario to Vampire that hasn’t already been said? Plan on seeing plenty of panty shots, plot devices designed to create opportunity for said panty shots, and possibly some musical numbers as well. Odds are good that if you’re interested in the second season, you already watched the first anyway…

Notable:

  • Same staff and cast all around. Yawn!
Title: Shikabane Hime Aka
JP Title: 屍姫 赫
Studio: Gainax
Genre: Horror/Action
Starts: October 2nd
Airs: AT-X, Thursdays at 10:30pm
Link: http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/shikabanehime
Summary:
Not long after the massive triumph that is Gainax’s Gurren Lagann, the team announced that they were working on a new anime adaptation of the manga Shikabane Hime, or Corpse Princess. The story revolves around a young woman named Makino, who is undead herself and must return 108 Shikabane (undead corpses) in order to be at peace herself.

Notable:

  • Director Masahiko Murata is pretty at home with the supernatural and bizarre: he’s directed episodes of Lain as well as the entirety of Gilgamesh, plus the 2007 Giant Robo remake.
  • Another live-action actress taking on a voice role: Nana Akiyama, who played Akira in the live-action tokusatsu Kamen Rider Hibiki, will voice Makino.
  • Both the OP and ED will be performed by angela, whose Heroic Age OP “Gravitation” was arguably more memorable than much of the anime.
Title: Shugo Chara!! Doki
JP Title: しゅごキャラ!!どきっ
Studio: Satelight
Genre: Magical Girl
Starts: October 4th
Airs: TV Tokyo, Saturdays at 9:30am
Link: http://shugo-chara.com
Summary:
You know, the last magical girl series I really got into was Sailor Moon, my original gateway anime. But I have to admit that I’m totally in love with Shugo Chara!: it’s got a relatively uniquely flawed heroine who isn’t hideously cutesy in personality OR voice, and a cute story that also isn’t overwhelmingly inspid for the sake of a child audience. It’s good times all around.

Notable:

  • Although it has its own name, this is more of simply the continuation of the last season, which ended on September 27th. As such, there don’t seem to be any staff or cast changes.
  • Interestingly, this new season of Shugo Chara! is going to have a late-night airing as well as the daytime airing. It won’t feature bonus content a la Soul Eater, but it says a lot about the show’s appeal to those who are only children at heart.
Title: Skip Beat!
JP Title: スキップ・ビート!
Studio: HAL Filmmaker
Genre: Shoujo/Drama
Starts: October 6th
Airs: TV Tokyo, Sundays at 2am
Link: http://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/anime/s-beat
Summary:
Here’s another shoujo series I’m really looking forward to. Skip Beat! Is the tale of Kyouko Mogami, a young girl who has always been in love with her friend Shoutaro. Her parents approved of her and she spent a lot of time helping out at their ryoukan, but eventually moved with Shoutaro to Tokyo to support his music career. She paid his bills and cared for him, only to one day overhear him talking about how plain and annoying she is to his manager. She vows to become an even bigger star than he is as her revenge!

Notable:

  • This anime is actually running simultaneously in Japan and Taiwan. If only the U.S. was so lucky!
  • Marina Inoue (Gurren Lagann’s Yoko, Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei’s Chiri Kitsu) is set to play Kyouko, to my delight. Mamoru Miyano plays that dastardly Shoutaro, and Katsuyuki Konishi (Gurren Lagann’s Kamina, Blood+’s Haji) plays the mild-mannered superstar Ren, another love interest of Kyouko’s. Kamina x Yoko returns! Sorta…
  • Director Kiyoko Sayama is going to be busy with this heavily-anticipated adaptation of Yoshiki Nakamura’s popular manga, as well as another: the sequel to Vampire Knight.
Title: Tales of the Abyss
JP Title: テイルズ オブ ジ アビス
Studio: Sunrise
Genre: Fantasy
Starts: October 3rd
Airs: Tokyo MX TV, Fridays at 9pm
Link: http://www.tv-toa.jp
Summary:
In a world ruled by six elements (or fonon)– Shadow, Earth, Wind, Water, Fire and Light –a seventh is discovered, Sound, which allows people to read the future. Don’t ask me how that makes sense. In this world we find Luke fon Fabre, who is destined to bring great prosperity to his country…which of course leads the young man to be something of a target to the forces of evil.

Notable:

  • Naturally based on the popular 2005 (2006 in North America) PS2 role-playing game, which is the…I believe sixth entry in the “Tales of” game series, Tales of the Abyss is being directed by Kenji Kodama, the man behind City Hunter (plus Kekkaishi and a bunch of Detective Conan movies).
Title: Tentai Tenshi Sunred
JP Title: 天体戦士サンレッド
Studio: AIC Asta
Genre: Gag
Starts: October 4th
Airs: TV Kanagawa, Saturdays at 12:45am
Link: http://www.sunred.jp
Summary:
This wacky gag anime is based, of course, on a wacky gag manga. I can’t tell exactly what it’s about but it at least appears to involve a Genghis Khan lookalike, a mummy, a bunny, and a man with a chicken head…for starters.

Notable:

  • The original manga is by Makoto Kubota, who also did the illustrations for the kiddie gag series Shampoo Ouji.
  • The titular Sunred (who I gather is the Genghis Khan lookalike?) is being voiced by Shun Takagi in his first lead role. Another character, Kayoko, is being voiced by Makiko Nabie, also in her first lead.
Title: Tetsu no Linebarrels
JP Title: 鉄のラインバレル
Studio: Gonzo
Genre: Mecha
Starts: October 4th
Airs: TBS, Saturdays at 2:25am
Link: http://www.linebarrels.jp/english/index.html
Summary:
Since they’ve officially translated it, can I just paste the blurb from the English site for this show? No? Well, fine! Boy meets girl and mech, boy starts saving the world with said girl and mech.

Notable:

  • Linebarrels of Iron, as Gonzo is translating the title, is based on the manga of the same name by Eiichi Shimizu and illustrated by Tomohiro Shimoguchi.
  • Our lead, Kouichi, is being voiced by Tetsuya Kakihara, also known as Minamike’s Fujioka and Gurren Lagann’s Simon.
  • Aaaaand alongside Kakihara is Mamiko Noto (Jigoku Shoujo’s Ai Enma, Negima!?’s Nodoka) playing the girl, Emi.
Title: To Aru Majutsu no Index
JP Title: とある魔術の禁書目録
Studio: J.C. Staff
Genre: Fantasy
Starts: October 5th
Airs: ChibaTV, Sundays at 1:35am
Link: http://project-index.net
Summary:
To Aru Majutsu no Index is set in a world where science and magic work in conjunction, Touma Kamijo is a typical high school student…until he meets a strange girl dressed in a vaguely nun-like outfit who calls herself “Index” and sends him down the path of magic.

Notable:

  • Touma Kamijo will be voiced by the relatively new Atsushi Abe, voicing Souma Kuukai in Shugo Chara! and Akiyuki in Bounen no Xam’d.
  • Meanwhile, Yuka Iguchi– Idol Master Xenoglossia’s Haruka and true tears‘ Aiko Andou –will be voicing Index.
Title: Toradora!
JP Title: とらドラ!
Studio: J.C. Staff
Genre: Shounen/Romantic Comedy
Starts: October 2nd
Airs: TV Tokyo, Thursdays at 1:20am
Link: http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/toradora
Summary:
Like a certain other lead male from a shounen series, Ryuuji always appears angry and scares off most potential friends in spite of being a pretty normal guy. He starts his school year happy to be in the same class as his crush, only to bump into a new student named Taiga Aisaka. The two don’t exactly hit it off, with her bossy attitude causing him trouble…but the two strike a deal to help each other get to their crushes, since Taiga is friends with Ryuuji’s and Ryuuji’s best friend is Taiga’s.

Notable:

  • Rie Kugimiya (Zero no Tsukaima’s Louise, Shakugan no Shana’s Shana, Hayate no Gotoku’s Nagi) adds a fourth character to her tsundere list by voicing Taiga.
  • Junji Majima, Kodomo no Jikan’s lead Aoki-sensei and Shugo Chara!’s Nikaido-sensei, takes a break from playing a teacher to play a student, Ryuuji of course.
  • Toradora! is based on the popular light novel series written by Yuyuko Takemiya and illustrated by Yasu– who also assisted on the video game The Promise of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Title: Tytania
JP Title: タイタニア
Studio: Artland
Genre: Sci-Fi
Starts: October 9th
Airs: NHK, Thursdays at 11:30pm
Link: http://www.tytania.jp
Summary:
They invented the term “space opera” for a show like Tytania: set in a future where humanity has spread its seed throughout the galaxy, the series follows a boy who abandons the empire of Titania to fight in a rebel faction against the intergalactic power.

Notable:

  • The aforementioned boy, Jouslain, is being voiced by Daisuke Kishio, who is pulling triple duty– he’s Rosario to Vampire’s Tsukune and Vampire Knight’s Kaname Kuran.
  • Katsuyuki Konishi (Kamina!) is voicing a character named Fan Hulic, although his role isn’t really known yet.
  • The anime is based on a novel series by Yoshiki Tanaka that started in 1988, is three volumes long to date, and is still technically ongoing…even though the third book was published in 1991.
Title: Vampire Knight Guilty
JP Title: ヴァンパイア騎士 Guilty
Studio: Studio Deen
Genre: Shoujo/Fantasy
Starts: October 7th
Airs: TV Tokyo, Tuesdays at 1am
Link: http://www.vampire-knight.jp
Summary:
The misadventures of Yuki, the soon-to-be vampire Zero, and the vampire prince Kaname Kuran continue in this sequel. But what about Zero’s homoerotic relationship with this twin? And who is the father of Yuki’s baby? And what about Aido?! This and more on…As the World Bites!

Notable:

  • Sing along with me now…no shakeups in cast or staff!
  • Ahh, but we do have new OP and ED themes: the OP is “Rondo” by ON/OFF, and Kanon Wakeshima– who performed the ED for the first season –returns for the second, with “Suna no O-shiro.”
Title: Yozakura Quartet
JP Title: 夜桜四重奏 ~ヨザクラカルテット~
Studio: Nomad
Genre: Fantasy
Starts: October 3rd
Airs: TBS, Fridays at 1:30am
Link: http://www.tbs.co.jp/anime/yozakura
Summary:
Four teenage superheroes run a town in their own merry and chaotic manner. They are Hime, the all-around superheroine; Ao, the mind-reader; Kotoha, whose very words become whatever she needs; and Akina, who’s your average, run-of-the-mill guy thrown in for good measure.

Notable:

  • So, let’s talk seiyuu! Misato Fukuen (Rosario to Vampire’s Kurumu) as Hime, Saki Fujita (Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight!’s Momoha) as Ao, Miyuki Sawashiro (Di Gi Charat’s Puchiko) as Kotoha, and Yuuki Kaji (a newcomer with three roles this season– in this, Kuroshitsuji, and Mouryou no Hako) as Akina.
  • Music is a running theme in Yozakura Quartet, and the themes are no exception: Savage Genius performs the OP, “Just Tune,” while Round Table (featuring Nino) perform the ED, “Nagareboshi.”
Title: Zettai Yareru Grecia Shinwa
JP Title: 絶対やれるギリシャ神話
Studio: Hoichoi Productions
Genre: Fantasy
Starts: October 5th
Airs: NipponTV, Sundays at 1:25am
Link: http://www.ntv.co.jp/yareru
Summary:
I got some more tips on what this series is all about (thanks Toshi!). Apparently it’s a guide on how to get laid, Greek style: each segment includes an anime depiction of a Greek myth, and then a live-action scene showing you how to use the story to score. The title even translates to “You can Definitely Do It! Greek Mythology.” Oh, and apparently it’s quite racy, and the main actor is going to test the lessons out at a hostess club. Am I a bad, bad person for thinking that this sounds awesome?

I loved cluster edge. As for Hell Girl, I watched the first season, but the second just wasn’t scarry to me anymore

  2. melchizedek Says:

I’m also excited for rosio to vampire the second season. I was a little worried with the cliff hanger ending. I want to find out what human boy has in store for him.

I read on the wiki that the priciple of that crazy school is some kind of exorcist O.o

  3. Niko Says:

Oh god, I keep forgetting how much stuff is coming out this season. I’m really looking forward to Casshern and Gundam, and there’s a lot of stuff I need to try out.

    Thanks for the guide.

Seems to be missing Stitch! from the list. Seems just about every anime guide seems to be not including it. Figured there’d be curiosity towards it, but I guess I’m wrong there.

Anyways, ignoring that, god that’s alot of anime for this season. Probably the biggest season this year so far, but if I recall, doesn’t the Fall season typically have the most new shows starting?

Planning on picking up Tales of the Abyss, Stitch, Inazuma Eleven, Nodame (provided I finish watching through the first season), and Michiko to Hacchin. Possibly one or two others but nothing really catches my interest as of yet.

Wow, what would I do for my fix without you gia?

There’s so much stuff and so little time…here’s what I wanna watch in this season, and there’s alot to watch:
    Kemeko Deluxe
    KUROZUKA
    Kyou no Go no Ni
    Macademi WAsshoi!
    Michiko to Hatchin
Rosario + Vampire CAPU2 (gotta watch the first season first)
    shikabane hime (OF COURSE)
    Yozakura Quartet

…I’m gonna have to knock this list down or find a lot of time.

  13. Zeouterlimits Says:

Another season, another crazy amount of shows.
I never get to watching all of the ones I’m interested in…
Well, I’ll make sure to watch one… *waves his pro-Nodame flag*

  14. Daryl Surat Says:

For me it’s the opposite. Of all the new shows starting these season (and not counting OAVs like the new Space Adventure Cobra which nobody fansubbed to my regret), there are only about three I’m particularly interested in: Casshern Sins, Hokuto no Ken Raoh Gaiden: Ten no Haoh, and Tytania. The chances of any of these being fansubbed past more than a few episodes if at all is close to zero (I know the first ep of Casshern Sins got done at least). So it’s really hard for me to get jazzed over this current season. Now that Macross Frontier and (for now) Slayers Revolution are over, every single show I watch that’s currently ongoing in Japan has zero fansub groups working on it. In light of this, please excuse my resentment that multiple groups are racing each other over Clannad and absolutely nobody wants to touch Golgo 13. No mention of Golgo 13 despite the fact that it’s still running this season? I SMELL BIAS.

Anyway, since absolutely nobody cared to answer your direct inquiry (because nobody else cares, alas), I greatly prefer the original voice of Raoh, Kenji Utsumi, to the new voice actor Takashi Ukaji. Ukaji sounds like a weak 80 year old man, which is completely inappropriate for the character. Especially now in the current (loosely fitting within continuity) TV series which depicts Raoh as a younger man.

  15. gia Says:

Daryl: Just for the record, I generally don’t include shows that are still running from previous seasons in my season previews, unless it’s “new season”/sequel (for example, Shugo Chara! only barely counted).

I DID include Golgo 13 in my 2008 spring preview, when it was set to start airing. ^_^
