NYCC08: TOKYOPOP

By gia on April 20th, 2008   Con Reports, Features

We’re missing Kasia, who has the powerpoint presentation, but Lillian is here to start the panel at least for questions, so here we go~

Apparently the interviews that were done as a Van Von Hunter promo at New York Anime Fest are being developed into a full-length film, and Yuri Lowenthal is voicing the titular character.

I asked the Aya Kanno question, and someone who is NOT Tpop already has the Otomen license. TOKYOPOP.com will be getting an update soon that will allow people to actually find book release dates again. Huzzah!

Someone asked how they decide whether to go with Japanese titles or translate them; it varies depending on the title, bookstores and bosses have input, and sometimes it doesn’t really work out (like Kimi wa Petto/Tramps Like Us, the quote being roughly: “So people were asking us ‘when is kimi wa pet coming out?’ and we were like ‘dude we’re on volume 7.’”

Final question before the powerpoint: is the Japanese market adjusting at all for western fans? The companies are aware, but at the end of the day, the licensing revenue of most non-Naruto series is minimal compared to the money made in Japan proper, so sometimes it’s a bit of an afterthought (though they are curious about things like the rating system, how bookstores buy books, etc).

Alrighty, starting up with previous announcements: Fruits Basket planner and sticker collection (mentioned at Sakura 08), Phantom Dream Geneimuso from Furuba creator Natsuki Takaya, it looks a bit darker than FB; it’s actually her first professional series.

A recent big announcement is the three-year deal with Blizzard, including more trilogies in both Warcraft and Starcraft worlds starting this summer. Five books in five months starting in August…busy busy busy. They have some cool talent lined up they say, including a Korean artist (who has been left unnamed); more info at the summer cons…hopefully.

Castlevania Curse of Darkness by Kou Sasakura is due out in September. Star Trek: The Next Generation manga anthology is also on its way (the temporary cover art looks like cardboard cutouts, which sparked a fun story from Lillian: she used to have an inside joke with a college roommate that if they got a Keanu Reeves cardboard cut-out it’d be like having the real thing. That has nothing to do with anything, but Tpop’s panels are fun. Just FYI).

Fate/Stay Night manga is also on its way out, probably in October. Otsuichi’s novel GOTH, a well-known pop novel author in Japan (it’s NOT an illustrated novel, but there IS a manga adaptation, and TOKYOPOP will be releasing the manga as well). The manga is illustrated by Welcome to the NHK artist Kendi Oiwa, and it’s all impressively gruesome, we’re told. The novel has also been optioned by Fox Atomic so there may even be a movie in the works.

The Bizenghast novel will feature a lot of the backstory of the popular OEL title (one of Tpop’s most popular, we’re told). The Princess Ai Encounters novel is also still on the schedule, surprise surprise! A new manga trilogy called Prism of the Midnight Dawn is also in the works for later this year. Gorgeous cover art, I have to agree with Lillian on that. Uploading a pic of it now.

Grr, more tech problems. Previously-announced titles: Vassalord, Silver Diamond, and Daemonium are all due out in July; Jyu Oh Sei is probably going to replicate the recent 3-volume bind-up re-release it just got in Japan. Return to Labyrinth and Gakuen Alice continue on strong as well. There is also some Jim Henson news pending that can’t be talked about.

Oh, and before I forget, Loveless volume 8– which just came out in February in Japan –is on its way out this September already, very fast-tracked. Sergeant Frog is going strong and they had a spinner at the booth for people who bought volumes of it or Gakuen Alice.

Gothic & Lolita Bible volume 2 comes out in June. Volume 1 was about 75% translated Japanese content and 25% original American; they plan for it to get more 50/50 as the magazine continues. They also adapted the G&L Bible patterns to slightly larger sizes for the fact that Americans tend to be a liiiiittle bigger than Japanese women.

Co-publishing deal with Harper Collins is also going well; currently on the screen is Spy Goddess, whose first volume came out in March and v2 is due out next March. Warriors‘ first trilogy was finished early last year and continues on. A one-shot based on a character named Scourge is due out I believe she said in May, and a new trilogy is also coming up. They definitely recommend for the 10+ kids market.

More OEL: Vampire Kisses: Blood Relatives, which I have to say has really nice cover art. (Artist Rem picked up a Kodansha award if I remember correctly).

And their new pilot program: they’re commissioning a couple of chapters, paying the artist, and running them on the new site when it launches (six series are set to date). Based on reader response and how Tpop feels about the titles, they will proceed with full graphic novels for the ones they think are working out. They think it’s a much more timely process than their current one, since a full graphic novel can take some time.

Another Yaoi Press pair, Dany & Dany (I recognized them; their art is pretty good), is noted as having one of these projects, along with another Svetlana (but not Chmakova). Oh, and these chapters are made available for free, apparently. Good stuff.

Blah blah Rave Master anime on Verizon’s Vcast as well as Bizenghast. They’re not sure what’ll happen with Rave Master afterwards– might become available on Tpop.com or elsewhere on the Internets. Gakyushu! and Sokora Refugees are the newest iManga they’re working on, the former coming out in May.

Finally, their concert tour with MUCC, the Underneath, and D’espairs’Ray– the Taste of Chaos 2008 tour. And their con schedule. Now for a very short Q&A…oh! They have the Kyo Kara Maoh! novels. Good stuff. (They announced the manga at NYAF07.)

The end!

NYCC08: Follow-Up Questions

By gia on April 20th, 2008   Con Reports, Features

Okay folks, I can’t take any more questions except for TOKYOPOP now, because I’ve left the dealer room and I’m leaving the con after Tpop (trying to make a pilgrimage to Kinokuniya).

That said, I did do my best to get answers to all of your questions:

  1. 1. When is Flower of Life 4 coming out? - It just came out in Japan a little while ago, so we’re looking at spring ‘09 for a US release. DMP has caught up with Yoshinaga’s releases in Japan so expect there to be a significant delay between releases from here on out.
  2. 2. Swallowing the Earth is the only Tezuka title DMP is planning to release this year.
  3. 3. DMP would love to license more Yoshinaga works, but they’re all pretty much taken– except Oooku, which is still a bit young to get a license out here.
  4. 4. FUNimation does not yet have release dates for Darker than Black.
  5. 5. Cast list and release dates for Ouran High School Host Club are still pending but we may have hope for them this summer. MAYBE. No promises! (Yeah, I don’t know what’s taking so long either…)
  6. 6. Bandai Entertainment does not yet have release dates for Clamp School Detectives.

The last question was pretty open (someone requested that I poke around and see if anyone wants to license Otomen, by Soul Rescue’s Aya Kanno. Unfortunately I got it after I left the dealer room, so even if I had time to try and hobnob and hint I couldn’t have gotten anything, sorry! I will ask Tpop if they plan to do any more Kanno works.

Feel free to drop TOKYOPOP questions if you have them; their panel starts in 10.

NYCC08: Last Shot for Questions

By gia on April 20th, 2008   Con Reports, Features

Today I’ve only got the TOKYOPOP panel, but if you have questions for any of the other companies who are here: Seven Seas, Bandai Entertainment, CMX, Digital Manga Publishing, FUNimation, Dark Horse, Del Rey Manga, and Yen Press (VIZ’s reps have all headed home, I believe; if not I still don’t know where I’d find them!).

Also, if you want to see a pic of the immense throng that formed for a Robot Chicken event that led to the involvement of the NY Fire Department, go here for a shot from Anime Almanac’s Scott. It is absolutely ridiculous.

NYCC08: CMX

By gia on April 19th, 2008   Con Reports, Features

More technical difficulties, but I think I’ve only missed previous announcements and stuff– Jim Chadwick and Asako Suzuki are running the panel; they’re on Classical Medley which is one I’m NOT familiar with, but the previous titles were all stuff I knew.

Next up is Astral Project from Enterbrain, a mature title from author Marginal, a pen name of Oldboy creator Garon Tsuchiya’s.

Also a cutesy title called Suihelibe! (say that ten times fast) about an alien girl who comes to earth to hunt certain monsters. A boy who wants to re-establish his school’s biology club agrees to help and together they start up the new club.

Fire Investigator Nanase is a “hidden gem” they hope we’ll like, about a rookie fire investigator whose parents died from arson. It should hit streets January ‘09.

Jihai, by Flat Earth/Exchange creator Toshimi Nigoshi, has also been licensed…wait, this one isn’t new. Have any of these been new? I don’t really know any of them anymore so I’m not even sure. =P Sorry guys. I can only google so fast.

Next up are Venus Capriccio by Mai Nishikata and the manga of Ballad of a Shinigami (Seven Seas has the light novels).

That’s it for the titles, new and old, so now they’ll open it up to the Q&A. They are looking into doing some cross-promos with FUNimation for Shin-chan– FUNi has a sampler at their booth and there’ll be a slip for the manga in with the new DVD box set.

Someone just asked if they have thought about releasing manga that’s a bit smaller than a standard American manga; CMX’s Shin-chan is actually slightly smaller than the Japanese copies, and for the rest of the books they’re trying keep everything the same trim sizes.

On Shin-chan they’re mostly doing footnotes but they’re keeping translation notes at the end in mind if necessary.

Someone else just asked why their Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo translated title (The Girl Who Ran Through Time) has a different name than the recent popular anime film, whose translated title is The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Apparently the story for the latter is slightly different than the former’s, though both are based on the same concept.

With Shin-chan, they went with the Japanese name Crayon Shin-chan and FUNimation dropped the “Crayon” for reasons everyone doesn’t know. (I’d hazard a guess that it was so no parents thought Shin-chan was a show for little kids, personally…) They also aren’t calling one character “Action Bastard” (although they’re rating it M so they could if they wanted). They decided that in the manga’s world, a show called “Action Bastard” doesn’t make any sense (because his mum wouldn’t let him watch it anyway) so they’re calling it “Action Mask” instead.

MangaBlog’s Brigid asked a question about FlexComics, whether the comics were serialized in print in Japan or if they were digital. They started out being serialized and then eventually transitioned to digital. You can buy some of the book (as much as half) for a buck or two, and then buy a tankobon version now.

The Girl who Ran through Time iteration was apparently serialized in Shonen Ace but Chadwick notes that it feels shoujo to him, so it can probably appeal to both demographics.

Next comes a question about Zuda, a new effort by DC to reach out to the webcomic artists and readers, with no collaborations currently in mind. Tenjho Tenge (love CMX’s version or hate it) has caught up to the Japanese volumes so they’re waiting for Oh Great to finish up books to print them.

Apparently their booth is hidden in the Wild Storm section of the D.C. booth, with some free swag, so I guess I’ll have to pop by there tomorrow. They also now have a newsletter called CMXtra! that you can sign up for on the official website. (*is signing up now*)

Someone asked about 70s manga like Eroica, and Suzuki commented that in addition to 70s she is particularly interested in manga from the 80s, so maybe we’ll see some new licenses to that effect soon, seeing as she’s the acquisitions manager…

NYCC08: Dark Horse

By gia on April 19th, 2008   Con Reports, Features

(Protip: for video, don’t shoot sideways…)

Okay, I actually have eight minutes before the Dark Horse panel is supposed to start, and it sounds like there’s probably only going to be one manga-related announcement, but here I am anyway. So devoted am I! When the announcement is made you’ll hear it here first.

And now we’re finally starting– they had to line people up outside for this because of all the crowding problems down here. The panel is being run by Jeremy Atkins, director of publicity, plus editors Rick Remender, Eric Powell, and Scott Allie.

I have a video of a little pre-show ditty (or most of it) that we were treated to while waiting for the people in line outside to file in, by the way; I’m currently uploading it to YouTube so I’ll throw it here when it’s done.

Spontaneous cupcake giveaway! Good thing, too, I was hungry. Some girl didn’t get a cupcake, so she gets the cupcake box, signed by Mr. Powell (creator of Dark Horse’s Goon, for those not on the up-and-up with Dark Horse’s American comics).

Okay, not a manga thing, but a lot of you guys like Buffy– Dark Horse is going to release a Buffy the Vampire Slayer tarot deck. Also in the works, a Buffy “talking board” (NOT a “ouija board,” *cough*).

And finally, finally! We’re on to manga. Mostly the 20th anniversary of Dark Horse’s manga publishing career. They’ve just launched Blood+ and Gantz is this summer, and of course the CLAMP mangettes are coming up soon, but first…

CLAMP’s Clover, in a full 512-page omnibus (32 color pages), as previously rumored. Should be about $20.

Next up is the Q&A, I’ll just post anything new that’s manga-related that comes up. In the meantime, the aforementioned video’s up above.

They have noted that should a live-action Akira (or any other out-of-print manga title of Dark Horses’) get made, they’ll most likely rerelease the manga.

NYCC08: Fire Department vs Nerds!

By gia on April 19th, 2008   Con Reports, Features

So I’m actually taking a little break from the con between panels (to fix the aforementioned phone problems), but I just got a text from my friend saying that in the panel area– 1E, which includes all the panels, not just manga and stuff –the Fire Department of New York has been pushing people back.

The convention is ridiculously crowded today; dealer room and panels both. I don’t really have con claustrophobia problems but I actually had to ask a friend to back away from me a bit at one point. It’s really, really crowded. I hope that next year they get the entirety of the Javits center– or else they might just have to move. And I don’t know if there ARE any bigger venues than the Javits center in the area…

NYCC08: Digital Manga Publishing

By gia on April 19th, 2008   Con Reports, Features

So we’re starting out with prizes that will be given out at the end of the panel, including copies of Robot, Vampire Hunter D, a Yellow doujinshi by Makoto Tateno, and…a bunch of other stuff. (I didn’t catch it all; i’m a bit distracted because my phone is having malfunctions. I see a copy of the Speed Racer manga up there too but I’m not sure if it’s a prize.)

DMP’s PR gal Rachel and a guy named Eric I’m not familiar with are running the panel, and Speed Racer voice actor Peter Fernandez will be there too…but they’re opening up with 801 Media facts, like the smuttiness points system, which is probably pretty interesting to the parents with kids in the audience. *cough*

Damn, I missed the first title, but Yuki Shimizu’s Ze is next, and they’ve got a lot more on the way. The first one was Mio Tennohji’s Koi wa Aserazu.

More BL, this time Juné’s: Hero Heel 2 and 3 are really truly comin’ out, 3 is Dec. 16, 2008. Love Recipe 2 on June 24th, and they have some copies at the booth, so that’s where I’m going next…

Whoa, whoa, not sure if these are new announcements or not: Romantic Illusions, You Make My Head Spin, Passionate Theory, Sighing Kiss, Vampire’s Portrait, Stop Bullying Me!, Lover’s Pledge, Physical Attraction, Dry Heat, Junior Escort, Sea View, White Brand by Youka Nitta, Intriguing Secrets, Shards of Affection by Duo Brand., and Blue Sheep Reverie.

And finally, DMP, including DMP Platinum. First up, pimping Speed Racer, of course. And here is Speed himself, Peter Fernandez!

Announcement: Swallowing the Earth, a lesser known Osamu Tezuka manga. DMP is also relaunching a bunch of books at a cheaper price of $9.95 (and smaller print size too), starting with Minoru Murao’s Knights. And the Vampire Hunter D creators are at AX, and more announcements next week!

That’s it for announcements; the rest was Fernandez chatting about his history with Speed and other dubs, which was fun but rather hard to keep up with for typing– but I have no doubt that there’ll be a dozen or so interviews with him to link to in the coming future.

NYCC08: Yen Press

By gia on April 19th, 2008   Con Reports, Features

It’ll be a minute before they actually get going, but here shall be the post. Not that you care about my state, doubtless, but I’m hungry– these three-panel-in-a-row deals are fun but a little rough on the meal schedules.

Hokay, the usual team: Rich Johnson, Kurt Hassler, someone whose name I can’t spell (sorry!), intern Abby (wearing wings), and…crap, I missed the last name. I’ll get back to you on that.

They just mentioned they had cancelled the top secret panel, which was apparently the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya license, woot. Once again, they’ve got the manga, and they’ll also publish the light novels in conjunction with Little, Brown & Company in their Young Adult line.

More news on Yen+, the company’s upcoming monthly anthology magazine, which is debuting in July. It’ll be a whopping 460 pages, with a list price of $8.99, which I think is a pretty excellent price point. It’ll also include exclusive content from Square Enix, and will read from both directions. Cool beans.

Yen+’s titles will include various Square Enix titles, including Atsushi Ohkubo’s Soul Eater (yay!), and they will lead up to the tankobon with Ohkubo’s previous work B.Ichi in October. Next up: Nabari no Ou, another new anime. I’m liking the anime considerably better than I expected, so I’m excited to hear about that! ♥

TPBs of these titles for all of these come out in ‘09, by the way! Also in Yen+ (and getting tankobon in ‘09): Sumomomo,Momomo, which is another favorite of mine, by Shinobu Ohtaka. So far, Yen+ has just sold me about five copies to hand around to friends, seriously. Bamboo Blade! This anthology is seriously epic as far as I’m concerned.

Next up: Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, and that’s the end of the right-to-left Japanese material. Now the left-to-right OEL stuff, starting with Maximum Ride. And can I just say that their intern really does look a lot like the gal in their art? Maximum Ride will also be in a Free Comic Book Day sampler on May 3rd, btw.

Svetlana Chmakova’s Nightschool was, of course, the first title announced for Yen+. Moving on to Korean materials: Pig Bride is first, by KookHwa Huh and SuJin Kim, followed by Jack Frost by JinHo Ko. Whew.

Moving on from Yen+ are some more TPBs, including Chinese man hua Wild Animals.

In the Q&A now: they’re looking at Chinese man hua creators from all over, not just Taiwan.

For Yen+ they’ll be releasing the first few chapters over several months in the anthology before moving it on to tankobon releases, at which time their spot will be vacated in the anthology.

The Haruhi novels will not be watered down for American audiences, though the text will be edited for readability (literal translations of the novels can read kind of awkwardly to mainstream audiences).

Yen+ will have subscriptions available, for $49.97 for twelve issues/one year, as opposed to a $107.88 cover price.

Oh, and that’s it. They’re done. Wow. I get food now! ♥ See you back in a bit for DMP!

NYCC08: Del Rey Manga

By gia on April 19th, 2008   Con Reports, Features

The purple-suited Ali of Del Rey Manga just slapped some Fairy Tail slap-bracelets onto VIZ reps, which makes me giggle. (As do the bracelets. Transported back to my childhood!)

Dallas Middaugh and I just bonded over our locational names (full name is Georgia, if you didn’t know). Moving on, now we’re throwing slap bracelets around…one of the reasons they went with slap bracelets is so that when Ali would throw them around, no one would get hurt, as nearly happened with their last freebie– pins.

The panel consists of Dallas, editor Tricia Narwani, director of acquisitions Mutsumi, and Ali Kokmen. And some very squeaky microphones. ANN just saved the day by turning off the microphones.

First up, Hiro Mashima’s Fairy Tail 1 and 2. Mashima, of course, is well-known for Rave Master but he has, we’re told, matured greatly with Fairy Tail (though Dallas says he’s probably not yet at his peak). The series debuted at #8 on the graphic novel sales list, so good stuff there.

Next up is Natsumi Ando and Miyuki Kobayashi’s Kitchen Princess. The fifth volume also broke into the top 10 bookscan list, a slowly growing “sleeper hit” for Del Rey. Note to self: check it out. Dallas also admitted to having only just started it himself (and to not reading everything Del Rey puts out– only so many hours in the day).

Moving into the new title announcements, due in Spring 2009…Gakuen Prince by Jun Yuzuki, a bishie romantic comedy, apparently it’s doing very well in Japan (PR manager April Flores just made an appearance, hi April!). A prestigious girls-only school starts allowing boys in, but only a very select few…and the “girls are just starving for men. It’s a harem turned into hell.” Sounds fun to me. Right up my alley, even.

Next up is Samurai 7, the manga by Mizutaka Zuhou, due out in April 2009. Based, of course, on Akira Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai (and the anime of which

SAYONARA ZETSUBOU SENSEI! MARCH 2009! I’M THERE! YARRR! *flails* On the title, they’ve decided to go ahead and keep the Japanese title, which caused them a battle with the original Japanese publisher (Kodansha), but there is a subtitle: The Power of Negative Thinking. Good stuff!

A final new license, a novel: The Case of the Dragon Slayer, by Boogiepop author Kadano Kouhei, due out in February.

Talk of the upcoming Wolverine manga, which will be shounen and which has some pretty nice character designs– not too manga-ish, but definitely not classic American style either.

Then there’s the X-Men shoujo manga, character designs for Kitty Pryde, and it’s much more classic manga style and very shoujo…actually it reminds me of shoujo manhwa a bit. Apparently Kitty is going to be the first female student at Xavier’s academy. Ice Man is her love interest, and I really like the designs for Night Crawler, Kitty’s first friend (why can’t HE be the love interest? Night Crawler FTW!). And finally, Beast looks like Totoro.

…I’m not even kidding. I can’t take any photos (don’t have my memory card for my real camera and my cam phone *sucks*), but I’m sure they’ll be around soon…but yeah, he looks like a fanged, slightly mean Totoro. With a tie. Maybe Totoro and Ali combined, actually? Hm.

We’re moving into the Q&A: licensing novels is a bit harder than manga because it’s still a bit early in that market. Zetsubou will be coming out about every four months.

An interesting note about Faust: it includes a manga by Yun Kouga that is ONLY available in Faust and nowhere else in English. The title wasn’t mentioned so I’l have to look into it later.

And we’re wrapping up here…so stay tuned for Yen Press, who supposedly has something big for us.
