Assuming that the gender balance is close to even, that means that there are about 63.5 million men. 1 divided by 63.5 is 0.015, which means…1.5% of Japan is obsessed with Rei Ayanami (assuming no women are)?

Okay, honestly, the author of the column in question claims to believe that one million Japanese men are obsessed with her, and offers no hard facts to back it up. But still, wouldn’t you rather live in a country where 1.5% of men are obsessed with an emo anime character than one where 30% of the population still approves of George W. Bush?
