More Drama: Mitsurugi Haruka Kiki Ippatsu!

01/20/08 1521 hours

Ataru Kadida’s manga Mitsurugi Haruka Kiki Ippatsu! (”Haruka Mitsurugi In the Nick of Time!”) is being developed into a drama, according to Ultimatum. The manga is serialized in Comic Valkyrie and follows a girl named Haruka who has to protect her school’s campus from delinquent demons. She has a rival named Kanata who challenges her to a competition, which leads to Haruka being whisked off to some kind of tournament…and that’s all I can really translate on the plot. But there is mention of some amount of interactivity in the manga, like maybe they let readers vote on what happens next? I’m not 100% sure on that though.

Anyway, no date on the drama yet.

‘Naoko’ turns to theaters

07/24/07 0837 hours

Dan Doh!! creator Nobuhiro Sakata’s manga Naoko is going to be made into a live-action movie, according to TokyoGraph, with the title character played by Juri Ueno - who some may remember as Nodame in the Nodame Cantabile TV drama.

The story is about a talented track star named Yusuke who randomly bumps into the girl who his father died to save, the titular Naoko. She turns out to be the new track and field manager, and I have no doubt that drama ensues.

Taiwan Faster Than Tokyo?

07/21/07 0357 hours

According to this article from the Daily Yomiuri, Taiwan is faster than Japan at adapting Japanese manga into live-action TV dramas. Examples? Two drama adaptations currently in the works in Japan - Yamada Taro Monogatari and Hana-Kimi - were adapted into Taiwanese dramas a while ago - the first back in 2001 and the second last year.

Another example: Hana Yori Dango, which also spawned a Chinese boy band titled F4 - the four guys who played the band’s members in the TV show. Interesting stuff! They also talk a bit about China exporting dramas to other countries, though it looks like none of them have made it to Japan yet. Gee, I wonder why.
