And the Anime of the Year is…

02/26/08 1025 hours

Did anyone care about the Oscars this year? Yeah, I thought not.

Meanwhile, Variety reports on the Tokyo Anime Fair’s awards. Top prize– Animation of the Year –went to Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone.

Pretty much all the other prizes went to foreign works, interestingly– from Taiwan, Poland, Iran, South Korea, and France. The exception is the two Notable Entry (Student) prize– Takashi Kato’s Clockwork City took one of the two awarded.

Whooziewhatsit? Eva live what now?

12/14/07 1217 hours

The Brik’s Haus blog spotted this video on YouTube, of live-action actors rushing to get a look at a giant CG EVA-01. Teaser for a live-action Evangelion flick? Or maybe it’s for a new video game? Or maybe it’s just plain cockteasery by Gainax or some particularly talented Netizen. Who knows? It’s nicely done though.

On Your Desktop, Widginami Rei

09/22/07 1100 hours

Alafista notes that Yahoo! Japan users (like myself) can download an Evangelion widget that will look like Rei, Asuka, Shinji, or others and like, tell time. And stuff. Or something. It’s kinda cute. But I kinda hate widgets so I just loaded it long enough to check out. I was unimpressed, but hey, at least for once it doesn’t block non-Japanese IP addresses.

The Melancholy of Ikari Shinji

09/22/07 1051 hours

A friend pointed me to this Anime Desho post regarding “predictions” for anime in the next ten years, and one commenter offered: “KyoAni remakes NGE after prying the rights from Gainax’s cold dead hands.”

So, I decided to run with the idea.

  • Aya Hirano would play Shinji.
  • Asuka would keep making Rei (and Shinji) wear maid outfits.
  • That one episode where Asuka and Shinji do “synchronized fighting” would be SERIOUSLY EPIC. (And the ‘fighting’ would also be an extended version of what they do in the OP or ED sequence.)
  • Shinji would inexplicably always have a figure on top of his television; who the figure was of would rotate regularly.
  • Misato would make the :3 face a lot.
  • Gendou’s new hobby: photography. Of Rei and Asuka. A lot.
  • Asuka would have an ahoge.
  • Misato would, on occasion, make some kind of cute sound. I vote “hugu~” (ugu+hunga~!)
  • Minori Chihara would play Rei (…wait, actually, that really might work)

    …Wheee.

  • Evangelion: Genderfuck Edition

Courtesy of SWFBlog, I present: Evangelion, the Genderfuck edition. Gendouko is terrifying, but Shinjiko is somehow astonishingly appropriate…

    All sorts of wacky stuff

    09/08/07 1851 hours

It’s amazing how much harder it is to be incessantly devoted to posting news when someone isn’t paying you a living wage to do it!

That said, it’s time to play more catchup. This time, though, just the fun/cool/weird shit. Here goes.

  • Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure creator Araki Hirohiko managed to score a gig drawing the cover of an American science journal, says Canned Dogs. Career high or career low? You decide.
  • Blah blah blah D.C. comics, Random House, new distribution deal, etc.
  • A manga anthology created by a bunch of comedians ends publication after something like seven issues, to the surprise of…um, not me?
  • Just because many warez sites contain porn ads doesn’t mean the porn industry approves of copyright infringement. In fact, when it’s of their own material, companies will fight for the right to orgy.
  • Virginal loli magical girl + foul-mouthed military devotee tomboy = match made in heaven.
  • Really, really expensive swag.
  • Rozen Maiden’s Suigintou joins the racing circuit?
  • Aaand Motorou Mase’s manga Ikigami, which is centered around a guy who delivers an “Ikigami” paper to a person, who will then die in 24 hours, is getting a movie. The manga is about what these people do in the 24 hours they have left. Sounds kinda neat.

  • One Million Japanese Men Can’t Be Wrong

    09/03/07 1902 hours

    ayanami.png

ComiPress has decidedly NOT taken Labor Day off, and my favorite piece of news today has got to be this: allegedly, over 1 million Japanese men are obsessed with Rei Ayanami. Now, let’s see: there are 127 million people in Japan. Assuming that the gender balance is close to even, that means that there are about 63.5 million men. 1 divided by 63.5 is 0.015, which means…1.5% of Japan is obsessed with Rei Ayanami (assuming no women are)?

Okay, honestly, the author of the column in question claims to believe that one million Japanese men are obsessed with her, and offers no hard facts to back it up. But still, wouldn’t you rather live in a country where 1.5% of men are obsessed with an emo anime character than one where 30% of the population still approves of George W. Bush?

    Fun Stuff

    08/06/07 0838 hours

Sorry I was a little quiet yesterday, but I’m working on a seekrit projekt. ♥ Here’s what’s up as of this morning:

  • The big news today is of an adaptation of Petit Eva, those cute little SD Evangelion figures that spawned some 4koma strips as ads recently. ANN beat me to the details, such as the fact that all the characters (including the angels!) are being developed into high school characters. Oddly, though, they say that it’s being “made into video,” not that it’s being made into an anime - the whole thing is still a little unclear.
  • While I’m on ANN, they have an interview with Arina Tanemura up. I love how the guy’s like, “I hear you’re a big fan of Morning Musume!” And she’s all “Yes, I’m a big fan!” and he’s all “ORLY!? ME 2?!” (…to paraphrase).
  • The Minamike anime adaptation (based on the manga by Kyou no Go no Ni’s Koharu Sakuraba) is set to start in October. Guess I’ll have to get cracking on a Fall Preview, eh?
  • For you dubaholics, a Red Garden trailer from ADV.
  • International Manga Award winner Madeleine Rosca has part three of her Japan travelogue up.
  • ComiPress has word on a new Ishino Arashi manga, and a new US manga-style advertising company.
  • Last but not least: this has got to be the coolest punishment for a cop ever.

  • Prankitty Prank Prank: KISS - The Manga

    08/03/07 1614 hours

Okay, I know I’m going to come across as a total know-it-all smartass, but I am amazed at how many people have fallen for Ye Olde Comick Booke Blogge’s KISS manga hoax.

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that when I first read the blurb on Manga Blog, I totally fell for it. 100%. After Courtney Love and Avril Lavigne, not to mention the fact that KISS has done comics before? Yeah, barely bat an eye.

But as soon as I looked at YOCBB’s post, skepticism set in. First off: a KISS yaoi? Weird. And then Be Beautiful actually issuing a press release to a blog? Now that’s just crazy.

Then I scrolled down and saw the picture - c’mon, people, shouldn’t any anime or manga blogger worth their salt at least be able to recognize a ’shop of some art with Shinji and Kaworu from Evangelion? Even if you haven’t seen the show…I mean, Shinji’s towl even says NERV on it. o_o

    nerv.png

That said, I still think it was a pretty cute joke idea, so credit to YOCBB for that. ♥
