Business Media Makoto has a report on a new poll of peoples’ favorite anime, divided into what men said and what women said.

In general, the splits were kind of classic: men tended to favor the action/drama shows and women preferred lighter-spirited series. But there are some oddities– like One Piece being on the women’s list but not on the men’s. Here are the lists:

# Men Women
1.  Mobile Suit Gundam franchise My Neighbor Totoro
2.  Dragon Ball franchise Sazae-san
3.  Sazae-san Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
4.  Doraemon Case Closed
5.  My Neighbor Totoro Doraemon
6.  Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Heidi of the Swiss Alps
7.  Lupin III franchise Laputa: Castle in the Sky
8.  Space Battleship Yamato One Piece
9.  Laputa: Castle in the Sky Chibi Maruko-chan
10.  Kyojin no Hoshi* Dragon Ball

* Kyojin no Hoshi, aka Star of the Giants, is a baseball manga/anime about the fictional members of the real Yomiuri Giants team. The manga, written by Ikki Kajiwara and illustrated by Noboru Kawasaki, ran in 1966 and the TMS Entertainment-produced anime aired from ‘68-’71. It was the only show on the list I wasn’t very familiar with so I figured some of you might not be either.

Oricon took a “funniest manga” poll and TokyoGraph has the results: Gintama (licensed in English by VIZ Media) took the top spot! Gintama is one of those funny series that is huge in Japan but not terribly popular in the west– although that could be in part because its anime remains mysteriously unlicensed.

And the full list is:

  • 1. Gintama
  • 2. One Piece
  • 3. Ping Pong Club/Sexy Commando
  • 5. Gag Manga Biyori
  • 6. Nodame Cantabile/Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku
  • 8. Kochira Katsushikaku Kameari Kouenmae Hashutsujo
  • 9. Pyu to Fuku! Jaguar and Lovely Complex

You should check out TokyoGraph’s coverage, because they’ve got notes on how things were across gender lines (Gag Manga Biyori was the only title to hit the top 5 for both sexes, for example). It’s kind of neat to see the list because while some of them are popular in the west (Nodame, Love*Con, One Piece), some of them I’ve never heard of (…Kochira Katsushikaku Kameari Kouenmae Hashutsujo).

Studio Ghibli is #2!

Yes indeedy, Nausicaa.net has caught word of NiikeiBP’s most-valued brands of Japan list. Last year Ghibli placed 12th on the business-to-consumer list, but this year they’ve leapt up to #2, second only to Nintendo itself. And Nintendo was #7 last year; it swapped spots outright with Toyota this year.

It’s an interesting list, with Disney at #3, Sony at #4, and Nintendo DS having its own rank at #5. I highly recommend checking it out, if only because you’ll recognize the vast majority of the names on the list…and not because they’re anime-related. (Although FujiTV is on there.) One of the biggest leaps is Japanese fashion chain UNIQLO’s, who went from #52 to #12.

I spotted this on 2ch, where they were discussing the fact that Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu is NOT on the list. What is? Well, #1 is Lupin the 3rd, followed by Dragon Ball, Doraemon, Ashita no Joe, and Mobile Suit Gundam in 2nd through 5th place.

The list comes from TV Asahi, and it’s mostly pretty good…but it DOES seem odd that Haruhi was left off while Naruto, Bleach, and even Pokemon stayed on.
