SDCC07: CMX brings it home

07/29/07 1335 hours

CMX announced a few new licenses, as well as confirming Crayon Shin-chan:

  • Shirley, another maid series by Emma creator Kaoru Mori.
  • Teru Teru Shonen by Shigeru Takao
  • A Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo manga by Yasutaka Tsutsui

For fans of Victorian Romance Emma, they’ll also be putting out “volume 8,” a collection of short stories about various characters from the series. (Volume 7 is the final volume for the actual story arc.)

After those announcements they mostly just talked about Flex Comics, which they hope to launch in first or second quarter 2008.

And that’s pretty much it for San Diego Comic Con! Iiiii’m going to go home and take a nap.

  • SDCC07: ADVentures with ADV

    07/28/07 1603 hours

    appleseed.png

The ADV panel (see liveblog thread) started out with just trailers, then talked about ADV manga a bit. They’ll be announcing some new licenses over the next few months, and they’ll also be collecting Azumanga Daioh into an omnibus edition which will come in a larger trim size, which is pretty groovy.

Jumping back to anime, ADV plans to start putting out much of its new anime in a monthly fashion, starting with Air TV.

Then they announced the film Appleseed EX Machina, which is pretty interesting giving FUNimation’s announcement of Vexille by the team behind the original Appleseed flick. They also plan on putting out a bundle of a bunch of their movies, and that’s pretty much it for ADV announcements.

Edit: Just to clarify, ADV is doing production work on Appleseed EX Machina, i.e. the dubbing - Warner Home Video still presumably has the rights.

SDCC07: FUNimation goes to the movies

    07/28/07 1414 hours

    vexille.png

All of FUNimation’s SDCC announcements (see liveblog thread) were movies this time around, and three of the four were live action.

But the biggest news for most anime fans is that they’ve licensed the upcoming film Vexille, the CG-animated film by the team that did the film of Shirow Masamune’s Appleseed. (Did you know that Paul Oakenfeld did the soundtrack for Vexille? ‘Cause I’m not sure I did.)

Also announced are two samurai flicks, Kaze Hana and Love and Honor, as well as the lavish $30 million Japan-Mongolia production of Genghis Khan.

Other than that, the only real news is that the second Cased Closed film will be out in winter, and the One Piece OP and ED have been dubbed. And now, I shall scoot off for Del Rey.

    More Pre-Panel Catchup

    07/28/07 1320 hours

Alrighty, I’m waiting on the FUNimation panel, starting at 2:30 PST (forum thread is here, and I’ve been told that they will announce something significant, so they’ll have a solid trifecta of series from the three big summer cons). In the meantime, here are a few items making the blog rounds:

  • Here’s a tricky one - ANN reports that PWCW says that CMX has licensed the manga of Crayon Shin-chan, but I can’t find the article on PWCW and CMX hasn’t had their panel yet. (Though they DID announce that one title as part of Flex Comics earlier this weekend, so it’s perfectly possible. I guess I’ll know on Sunday.)
  • MangaBlog has the results of the Eisners, in which the manga who were nominated all lost, with the exception of one of the manga in the “Best U.S. Edition of International Material - Japan” category…which was sort of a no-brainer.
  • According to Gunota Headlines, a Gundam 00 race car is already in the works. Way cooler than the Garnier Fructis car.
  • Aaaand ComiPress spotted the official website for Mag Garden’s new Comic Blade Avarus anthology, plus a couple of other anthology tidbits.

  • SDCC07: Most of Yen Press

    07/27/07 1700 hours

Okay, I’m going to scoot out of Yen (see liveblog thread) a bit early so I can go to the Kevin Smith panel, which means I can’t get the full author information for a couple of these titles - my sincerest apologies! (I’d have been able to find them except NEITHER pop up right away on a search on amazon.co.jp or wikipedia.jp, booooo). I’ll find them and edit this post later tonight if I have time.

  • Sundome, a mature title by Kazuto Okada.
  • Kaze no Hana by Mizta Ushio and…someone.
  • Kieli by Yukako (something) and Shiori (something).

Kurt Hassler also says that they will not censor ANY of their books, right down to the sound effects will be translated directly rather than using vague equivalents.

  • SDCC07: Sailing the Seven Seas

    07/27/07 1627 hours

    hayate2.png

A few announcements from good ol’ 7S (see liveblog thread):

  • First, they’ll be dropping their manga prices from $10.99 to $9.99. Yaaaaay.
  • Their yaoi line will be called the “Bee Line,” presumably so it can use the acronym BL (which also stands for “Boys Love,” of course).
  • Their light novels will, from now on, come in the same size as the original Japanese size, due out early next year.
  • Once the third volume of OEL series Destiny’s Hand comes out, they’ll be releasing it in a single-volume omnibus edition, which they also want to do with their other OEL series as much as possible.

    And for new licenses:

  • Hayate X Blade (”Hayate Cross Blade”) manga by Shizuru Hayashiya (pictured)
  • Akatsukiiro no Seifuku Majou (”The Girl in the Dawn-Colored Uniform”) by Mera Hakamada (who also did The Last Uniform)
  • Girls Life (light novel)
  • Girls Revolution (light novel)

Another interesting tidbit - they say that they have several anime companies interested in the award-winning OEL title Hollow Fields by Madeleine Rosca.

  • SDCC07: A small serving of Broccoli

    07/27/07 1545 hours

Only one real new announcement from Broccoli (see liveblog thread) this time around: Nui!, whose author was not mentioned and which I can’t seem to find online (I’m guessing it has a different title in Japanese, grr). But the series is about a girl who likes plushies more than boys. And she likes them so much that some of her stuffed animals start turning INTO boys. And so suddenly she’s living with three bishounen. Oookay.

Other than that it was mostly a sum-up of everything else we’d already heard: Cosmode, Disgaea, etc.

  • SDCC07: V-Day

    07/27/07 1132 hours

Where “V” stands for “very full.” Today starts off with TOKYOPOP, which I’m going to liveblog right here, right now, followed by Dark Horse (though I honestly don’t expect much from them on the manga front so if you don’t see a DH post, that’s why), then Broccoli, Seven Seas, and Yen Press. (There IS a small break in there, during which I will acquire lunch. Huzzah.)

So keep an eye here and on the forums for all the news that’s fit to blog.

    Pre-bedtime goodies

    07/26/07 2221 hours

Well, okay, just one, but it’s a license so I thought I’d throw it out there for y’all before I headed off to sleep:

    Kyonshi Senjo

ComiPress notes that one new CMX title has already been announced thanks to D.C.’s new Flex Comics deal: Zombie Fairy (Kyonshi Senjo), by Daisuke Torii.
