‘Vampire Knight’ Novel, Insert Novel-ty Pun Here

By gia on April 14th, 2008   Anime, JP News, Manga, News, Novels

According to the official website for the Vampire Knight anime, a new original novel within the series’ world was released on the same day as the 7th volume of the manga (April 5th).

The novel features Aido-senpai (as opposed to the actual main characters), and the novel’s title is Vampire Knight: Ice Blue no Tsumi (or The Sin of Ice Blue). It was drawn by Vampire Knight mangaka Matsuri Hino, and it looks like the writer was Ayuna Fujisaki, who wrote screenplays for the ARIA anime (all of ‘em), the composition for Night Wizard, and also the second episode of Saiunkoku Monogatari.

Sooo. Do you guys wanna start sucking up to VIZ, or shall I? (Although given that it only took two releases for Vampire Knight to become one of the top properties of ‘07, I doubt they would even consider NOT publishing it…)

Finally, A Kanon I Can Approve Of

I mentioned in my first date with Vampire Knight that the ED theme, the Mana-produced “still doll,” performed by Kanon Wakeshima, is sexy and awesome. Then I found out that the full version can be heard along with the PV, so I figured I’d share it. The PV also informed me of something awesome: Wakeshima plays her own cello (both in the tune and in general). Sexy!

First Date: Vampire Knight

  • Title: Vampire Knight
  • Studio: Deen
  • Genre: Shoujo/Drama

Ratings (out of 5):

  • Story: ♥♥

  • Animation: ♥½
  • Characters: ♥♥♥
  • OP/ED Themes: ♥♥♥♥ (Totally forgettable OP, but the ED is pretty sexy, though the visuals for it are a little odd.)
  • Overall: ♥♥♥½

Thoughts:
Let me say from the beginning: I adore the shoujo soap opera cliche trash bag that is the Vampire Knight manga. And I know plenty of you do too, boys and girls– yes, BOYS and girls. Actually, a remarkable number of dudes have ashamedly admitted to digging Vampire Knight to me. I’ve even seen people trying to justify that VK isn’t shoujo because there’s supposed to be “action” later on. So let me just say: it’s a-okay to like shoujo, guys. Just like it’s fine for chicks to dig shounen. IT’S ALLOWED.

That said, the plot: Yuuki Cross is the adopted daughter of the administrator of the Cross Academy, a 24/7 school where, during the day, the “Day Class” takes its lessons. At night the Day Class returns to its dorm and the Night Class goes to the campus buildings. The Night Class consists of a bunch of people (particularly men) who are so attractive that the two campus guardians have to hold the Day Class at bay and escort the Night Class to school.

Yuuki is one of the two guardians, along with Zero Kiryuu, another sort-of adoptee of the school admin’s. But the guardians know a secret that the Day Class doesn’t know: the Night Class actually consists of vampires, and the guardians are there to ensure that the Day Class is kept safe should any of the allegedly pacifistic vampires slip.

The adaptation of Vampire Knight has a stellar voice cast– Mamoru Miyano as the troubled vampire hunter Zero, Yui Horie as the sweet pacifist Yuuki? Yes please! –but not such stellar visuals. Mangaka Matsuri Hino’s art is well-known for being detailed (sometimes overly so), dark, and striking. VK’s aren’t bad, but they’ve definitely lost the majority of Hino’s style. An added distraction for me is the lack of defining lines in the style, particularly on people…in fact, almost entirely on Yuuki. She winds up looking kind of like someone did a color-by-number but then removed the lines to separate the sections, if that makes sense. Here’s another cap:

I found it a little off-putting. All in all, I really hoped that this series would be a bit more big-budget looking, but we’ll see, I guess. As I mentioned before, the OP sequence is entirely forgettable, with pretty boring music and standard visuals. The ED “still doll,” on the other hand, is incredibly sexy– produced by Mana and performed by Wakeshima Kanon. Love it! The visuals for the ED are a little odd though; most of it is a still shot of Yuuki looking all broken doll-like, which is fine, but there’s this random chunk that features Yuuki spinning around as a ballerina. But not as a ballerina doll like in a jewelry box or something, but as a regular human ballerina doing spins. It’s very odd and out of character. But the song is so hot, I kind of don’t care.

Overall: if you’re up for hot and heavy shoujo cliches, complete with smexy emo vampires, this could be a fun ride. Sort of the Interview with a Vampire of the anime world. But if that dramatic gothy style doesn’t attract you…yeah, you should probably stay far away from this one.

VIZ Is the Creature with the Black Lagoon!

About goddamn time! MangaCast spotted some new VIZ licenses on Amazon.com, including the fantastically badass smuggler dramedy Black Lagoon, as well as another work by Vampire Knight’s Matsuri Hino called WANTED, two Arina Tanemura manga– Time Stranger Kyoko and one called Kanshaku Tamano Yuuutsu (no relation to Haruhi; “Short-Tempered Melancholy”) and the manga of Rosario to Vampire. Oh, and another Akira Toriyama work: Cowa!

Also licensed: Ayumi Komura’s Mixed Vegetables, Hisaya Nakajo’s Sugar Princess, and Youzabara Kanari and Kuroko Yabuguchi’s Gimmick!. MangaCast also has covers for previously-announced (I think) titles Cat Eyed Boy, One Pound Gospel, and of course, Slam Dunk.

…Sorry, went a little overboard on the rhyming there. But the site really is up! Check it out at http://www.vampire-knight.jp. Not that there’s much information beyond the start month (April) and the cast info, which matches the drama CDs I believe: Light/Tamaki/Setsuna (Mamoru Miyano) as Zero, Ayu/Naru (Yui Horie) as Yuki, Daisuke Kishio as Kaname, Lelouch (Jun Fukuyama) as Aidou, Greed (Junichi Suwabe) as Kain, Kira Yamamoto (Souichirou Hoshi) as Shiki, and Susumu Chiba as Ichijou. There IS a glimpse of what the anime will look like, finally, though.

Maybe I’m Just Clairvoyant

By gia on November 25th, 2007   Anime, JP News, Manga, New Series, News

So I’ve seen all the recent postings about the popular shoujo manga Vampire Knight getting an anime, and I kept thinking: “jeez, wasn’t that announced months ago?”

So finally I went through my aO archives (yes, I have every article I ever wrote for aO) and found…nope! I wonder if I got it mixed up with Rosario to Vampire? Except that I read Vampire Knight and the two series are really very different, so I can’t see how I’d get ‘em mixed up. Maybe it’s one of those things where there had been rumors for ages? Hmm…

Well, anyway. Hey look, Vampire Knight is getting an anime! And stuff.
